Khadja left Burundi for Zaire in 1975 and got married in 1978. In 1980 she emigrated to Belgium with her two-year old son. In 1985 she met musician Nicolas Fiszman, who helped her get a contract with BMG. Her second album, a 1994 release entitled Ya Pili, was critically acclaimed. Her breakthrough, however, came in 1996 with her widely popular album Sambolera, which was sung in Swahili, Kirundi, and French. Khadja Nin successfully used a blend between African rhythms and modern pop to create her own unique brand of music. One of her most popular songs is Sina Mali, Sina Deni, a translated cover version of Stevie Wonder's song Free.
Sous Le Charme
Khadja Nin Lyrics

Bandit bourreau des coeurs
T'es l'dernier des goujats
Ton sourire est une arme
Déloyale et me voilà déjà
Sous le charme
Gredin baratineur
La température monte
Faudrait p'têt que j'm'alarme
Qu'est-c'que j'fais?
je n'me rends même plus compte
Sous le charme
T'es tout c'que j'déteste
Et pourtant je reste sous le charme
Je me laisse séduire
Sans chercher à m'enfuir
Charmeur maudit charmeur
Salaud d'ensorceleur
Ce n'est pas le champagne
J'n'en ai bu qu'une larme
On dirait que l'ivresse me gagne
Sous le charme
Charmeur maudit charmeur
Satané séducteur
T'as dû poser une bombe
Dans mon coeur quel vacarme
Je me rends malgré moi je succombe
Sous le charme
The lyrics to Khadja Nin's song Sous Le Charme speak of the power of charm and seduction. The singer describes the subject of the song as a cursed charmer, a heartless bandit who wields his smile like a weapon, causing those around him to fall under his spell. The singer admits that she is one of his victims, lamenting that she cannot resist the allure of his charm, even though she despises him. She describes the rising temperature and the feeling of being intoxicated by his presence, despite knowing that he is a scoundrel and a seducer. In the end, she succumbs to his charm, unable to escape the hold he has on her.
The song portrays the conflict between reason and desire, between the mind's knowledge of right and wrong and the heart's attraction to dangerous charisma. It is a cautionary tale about the dangers of falling for someone who is not good for you, about the seductive power of a charismatic individual who knows how to manipulate others. The singer's admission of succumbing to his charm despite her better judgment reflects the universal human struggle between the logical and the emotional, the intellectual and the passionate.
