Her 1995 self-titled debut album provided her first country hit, "Just My Luck", as well as the follow-up "Those Words We Said". Her follow-up album, 1996's Bitter Sweet featured a more pop-oriented sound.
She has also had significant success as a songwriter for others. She collaborated with Radney Foster on "Nobody Wins" and co-wrote Trisha Yearwood's hit "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)" (Yearwood also covered Richey's "Those Words We Said"). Maura O'Connell and Brooks & Dunn covered her song "Every River". Patty Loveless, Mindy McCready, The Greencards, Terri Clark, Cyndi Thomson, and other country artists have recorded covers of her songs.
Richey provided backing vocals on "Come Pick Me Up" on the 2000 debut album Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams.
In 2004 her track, "A Place Called Home", was featured in episode 16 of season 5, "Shells", of the Angel television series. The song later appeared on the Angel soundtrack, Live Fast Die Never.
On 7 July 2007, she performed in Washington at Live Earth.
Her album, "Edgeland," was released in 2018.
In 2020 she released A Long Way Back: The Songs of Glimmer, based on new versions of the 14 songs on her 1999 album Glimmer, in a more acoustic style. Reviewing the album for the Seattle PI, Jon Sobel says "Richey's mapley voice, always unmistakeable, has developed a sheen of gravitas it didn't possess in 1999. Just as important, the songs hold up. The slighter ones ("So It Goes," "Good at Secrets," "Gravity") carry more weight in their new, more airy settings, thanks partly to Doug Lancio's artful and sensitive production. The strongest ("Didn't I," "Can't Lose Them All," the sublime "Come Around") feel cooler, or more studied, and somehow at the same time hotter, the emotions more precisely sketched."

Hello Old Friend
Kim Richey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To drop back in, well, you were right on time.
How have I been? Well, that can of worms ain't worth
Opening, Leave it at "fine," just fine
Ooo oo oo ooo ahhhh, I'm just fine
So how 'bout you? Yeah, how 'bout those big dreams?
Did some come true according to plan?
I forget, what was her name, ahhh, what was her name?
Ooo oo oo ooo ahhhh, good old what's-her-name
And is it me you want, or are you just lonely, well aren't we all
And I like the way you sound straight out of lost and found
Glad you called
Well, you made me smile, hell I laughed right out loud
And it's been a while, and it feels real good
You know what I'd wish, were I the wishing kind?
That you'd take a trip down to my neighborhood, ahhhh, my neighborhood
Ooo oo oo ooo, yeah, come on down to my neighborhood
And is it me you want, or are you just lonely, well aren't we all
And I like the way you sound straight out of lost and found
Glad you called
Hello old friend
The song "Hello Old Friend" by Kim Richey is a conversation between two old friends who haven't seen each other in a long time. The singer initially greets the friend, acknowledging that it is typical of them to show up at just the right time. When asked how she's been, the singer brushes off the question, saying that some issues are not worth opening up, and she's fine. The conversation then turns to the friend's life, and the singer asks if their dreams have come true, whether they're married or not, and the name of their partner. The singer also wonders if the friend is calling because they are lonely or if they genuinely want to talk.
The friend's response makes the singer happy, and she laughs out loud - it has been a long time, and the feeling is good. The singer then expresses a wish that the friend would come and visit her, inviting them to her neighborhood. She then repeats the question asked earlier, wondering if they want her or are just lonely. However, her tone suggests that she no longer perceives the question as important, as it seems that both of them are lonely, after all. In the end, the singer expresses her delight that the friend reached out to her, sounding "straight out of the lost and found."
This song expresses the simple joys of catching up with an old friend, reminiscing about the past, and finding comfort in their company. With its upbeat melody and nostalgic lyrics, "Hello Old Friend" evokes feelings of warmth and happiness.
