Neil Diamond was the great artist when I was young; I remember I received on my 22nd anniversary a present which was his LP with beautiful songs like 'Play me', 'Soolaimon', 'Stones', 'Cracklin'Rosie' and so many others. 'Canta Libre' is one off my favorites. Being from the Flanders in Belgium, I had to go to Germany for my military service at that time, in '74. In Lüdenscheid I went to see his movie 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull'. What an artist he has always been, such a great performer ! Quality on top !

What year were ya born? I was born in '50. That makes me 66 years old. When this song was released, I was 23 yrs old. Boy! I was fortunate to have lived during Neal Diamond's genius made the airwaves. I was also alive during The Beatles full run (a huge touch down), Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Dave Bruebeck, Harry Nilson, Don Frey (The Eagles), Jackson Browne, The Doors, Pink Floyd, and more! I can't name 'em all! Many geniuses! And I got most this as a member of the first generation that got it's music from a disk, in stereo and hi-fi! That's right, the FIRST generation to have portable Hi-Fi and Stereo music. We were blessed!

Wonderful song. When I first heard it a few years ago, I was struck by the textural similarities to Hans Zimmmer's Man of Steel theme. The "wind in the plain" moment is followed by a low, rolling piano motif that prefigures Zimmer's score, and the song overall speaks of elevation, resolution, flight. Soolaimon as a word isn't a million miles from "Superman" either, of course. On the other hand, this might all be in my imagination.

I was very pleasd when I was talking to a Neil Diamond tribute act at half time about this and he performed it in his second set. I absolutely love this song.. and haven't listened to it in years... now I have to dig out "Tap Root Manuscript" from my old vinyl album collection downstairs and listen to the whole thing... that was one of my favourite albums as a teenager in the 70's

This one has a different but cool rhythm. I had not heard it in a long time perhaps forty years. I used to hear it played in the radio in the early seventies.

That’s gatekeeping. How else would they know this song? Listening to an oldies playlist? Kids for the most part aren’t gonna do that unless they are influenced by the older generation.

I was 12 years old when my paternal popa died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Chase Farm hospital, Enfield, London, England, way back in December 1977. We were extremely close and on our way home from Chase Farm hospital, Dad played Neil Diamond - His 12 Greatest Hits (MCA Records - MAPS 7400) on his Land Rover's Sharp cassette player. It was if it were yesterday every time I hear any track played from this LP. Still brings a tear to my eye.
