One Day
Kodaline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day it's here and then it's gone
How are you still holding on?
How are you still holding on?

You've felt this way for far too long
Waiting for a change to come
You know you're not the only one
And life passes you by
Don't be wasting your time
On your own

You always try to see yourself
Through the eyes of someone else
Through the eyes of someone else

Too shy to say that you need help
You and everybody else
You and everybody else

Oh, life passes you by
Don't waste your time
On your own

As your heart gets bigger
And you try to figure out
What's it all about

And your skin gets thicker
As you try to figure out
What's it all about

One day it's here and then it's gone

How are you still holding on?
How are you still holding on?

Overall Meaning

Kodaline's song "One Day" is a representation of the fleeting nature of life and the constant change that comes with it. The lyrics start by recognizing how quickly time can pass and how difficult it can be to keep up. The repetition of the question "How are you still holding on?" indicates a sense of weariness and exhaustion as the character in the song struggles to keep up with the changes taking place around them. They've been waiting for something to change for too long, and it's become a struggle to remain optimistic.

The song then moves on to touch on a few key themes: the importance of community, the attempt to conform to other people's expectations, and the struggle to find meaning in life. The character in the song recognizes that others are struggling just as they are but still feels isolated and alone. They're trying to see themselves through other people's eyes, to understand what they should be doing and how they should be behaving, but they feel too shy to ask for help. They're also searching for meaning in life, growing and changing as they try to figure out what it's all about.

The chorus of the song repeats the message that life is fleeting, reminding the listener not to waste their time. The final lines, "As your heart gets bigger / And you try to figure out / What's it all about," suggest that the character is beginning to feel more confident and optimistic, recognizing that their heart is growing as they learn more about life and themselves.

A lot of people interpret this song as being about a relationship. But to me, it's about being alone and watching as everything happens around you. I feel like the song is telling us to get ourselves out there, and enjoy it because we will grow old, and one day we'll regret all the things we haven't done because of our insecurity.

@kiraanimerawr1

Really? People think this is about a relationship...? People are stupid, it's pretty obvious what the general topic is.

@KJ-tf2kk

kiraanimerawr1 exactly.

@syd2367

Everyone interprets music differently, so don't carry yourself on a high horse because you think your interpretation of the song is the correct one because there is never one meaning for a song. Music is for people to relate to.

@KJ-tf2kk
