Born in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo to a Congolese mother and Ghanaian father, Koffi grew up in Kinshasa.
He went to France to study, while in Paris, he began playing the guitar and writing songs. On his return to Congo he was a member of Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba's band. Koffi repopularized the slower style of soukous, which had fallen out of fashion. He dubbed this style Tcha Tcho, and it gained popularity outside Congo. Koffi's music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies. He has also participated in the salsa music project Africando.

Pili pili ezanga te mbandi ya manioko vraiment
Nga na liaka trop trop trop po na yoka bien
Bien na yoka bien
Mamadou dou mamarie sam samara mam mamade...
Koffi: djouma djeng vraiment okeyi
Otiki moninga na bwale
Youssou: aliana mama na didi stone
Mwana na ye ee ee
Lenga lenga lenga na lengi nde yo
Kokende n'o eleki somo djouma djeng
Zonga zonga soki ozongi te
Mikomisa na liste ya ba veuves
Mbala suka tala nanu ndenge mandala ezo katama
Sima na yo ekozala feti te mbala suka bwaka miso
Ndenge mandalala ezo katama sima ekozala liwa na nga
Lenga lenga lenga na lengi nde yo
Kokende n'o eleki somo djouma djeng
Zonga zonga soki ozongi te
Mikomisa na liste ya ba veuves
Matoyi na nga elali libanda nga na mbeto gymnastique
Nabomi mwinda na zipi tina moto 10 valiums esali rien
Uta cherie akenda festival ya b'insomnies nazo banga
Lobi na nga ezala bien pire qu'aujourd'hui
Djouma djeng comment ne sais tu pas que l'amour tue
Djere djef youssou
The lyrics of Koffi Olomidé's song Festival are in Lingala, a Bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African countries. The song is an upbeat and catchy tune that speaks about various themes such as love, music, and cultural festivals. The song starts by mentioning the Thomson River, also known as Lualaba River, in Congo, and goes on to talk about the spicy food of manioc (cassava) and how the singer is craving it. He also talks about his love interest and how he is too eager to see her. The chorus repeats the phrase "Lenga lenga lenga na lengi nde yo," which means "I love you so much" in Lingala.
The song also mentions several other African musicians like Youssou N'Dour from Senegal and Didier Stone from Congo-Brazzaville. The lyrics speak about the joy of attending cultural festivals and how they can bring people together. The singer talks about his experiences with drugs and addiction, and how he regrets losing his loved one because of his addiction. The song ends with a message of caution about the dangers of love and how it can be both beautiful and deadly.
