Overall Meaning

The song Musulman by Koffi Olomidé is sung in Lingala, a Bantu language spoken in Congo and is about a Muslim man who the singer meets and tries to understand his faith. The lyrics suggest that the two men (the singer and the Muslim man) come from different religious backgrounds and have different beliefs but still try to show mutual respect and learn from each other.

The chorus of the song “Moto tolinganaka koleka fumbwa na nguba, eh moto tolinganaka koleka mbisi na mayi, moto tolinganaka koleka mbuma na nzete” (People disagree like peanuts and oranges, like maize and water, like the forest and the bush) conveys the message that disagreements and differences between people are as natural and ubiquitous as different types of foods and forest landscapes. The singer uses food and natural elements to make a point that people can live together in harmony, despite their differences.

The verse “Yo otikaka koluka kotia singa na Tonga, na kati molili maboko ekoya kolemba” suggests that the Muslim man is praying and the singer observes and tries to understand his religion, by maybe copying his movements (kolemba, which means to dip or bow) and making a reference to the tongue (Tonga). The singer seems to appreciate the peacefulness of the scene, and tries to find common ground with the man by showing interest in his religious practice.

Overall, the song shows a message of acceptance and understanding for people from different backgrounds and religions, encouraging listeners to learn from others and appreciate their differences.
