Born in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo to a Congolese mother and Ghanaian father, Koffi grew up in Kinshasa.
He went to France to study, while in Paris, he began playing the guitar and writing songs. On his return to Congo he was a member of Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba's band. Koffi repopularized the slower style of soukous, which had fallen out of fashion. He dubbed this style Tcha Tcho, and it gained popularity outside Congo. Koffi's music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies. He has also participated in the salsa music project Africando.
Phaseur
Koffi Olomide Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Koffi Olomidé's song "Phaseur" express a sense of disappointment and frustration with a lover who promised love and commitment but failed to deliver. The song compares the promise of love to a "phaseur," a term originally used for a piece of equipment that changes the phase of an electronic signal, but is also used colloquially to mean someone who pretends or cheats.
Koffi Olomidé sings, "Even if there was only 10% of love left, I would have given it to you, but you left me without hope of return." The lyrics suggest that the singer was deeply invested in the relationship, but was ultimately let down by their partner's lack of commitment. The song's chorus, with its repetition of "mama yo ooo oh amor vraiment," adds to a sense of despair and heartbreak.
Despite its sad tone, "Phaseur" is also a danceable song with a catchy rhythm that incorporates elements of soukous and pata pata music. This blend of styles is typical of Koffi Olomidé's music, which often combines traditional Congolese rhythms with influences from jazz, salsa, and other genres. Overall, "Phaseur" is a poignant and complex song that speaks to universal feelings of love and disappointment.
