Tu serais mieux dehors
Je sais, répondit-elle,
J'ai tort d'être pucelle
Crois-moi en vérité
C'est ma célébrité
Et l'inconnue chanta
Comme on chante à l'église
Les dimanches matin
Aux messes des marquises
La chambre était au paradis
D'un vieil hôtel à luminaire
Où l'on cultive la chimère
En y mettant un peu le prix
C'est une chose épouvantable
On était presque au petit matin
J'avais beau lui faire un dessin
Elle voulait pas se mettre à table
Dis-moi, fille du Nord,
Avec tes airs primaires
Tu me la bailles amère
Je ne suis plus d'accord
Tant pis, répondit-elle,
Si je reste pucelle
La fin te le dira
Alors, tu comprendras
A peine ça commence
On change de décor
J' croyais que ces demoiselles
N'étaient jamais pucelles
Et puis, sait-on jamais,
A une exception près
Et la vierge lassée
Partit sans m'avoir eu
Ça n'était qu'un soldat
De l'Armée du Salut!
The song L'inconnue De Londres by Léo Ferré tells a story of a man who meets a mysterious woman on the streets of London. The man describes the chaos and violence of the city, with "screeching cries" and "guilty hands" all around. He comes across the woman who captures his attention with her calm demeanor and beauty. She tells him that she is a virgin and is only there by chance. The woman speaks in a poetic and enigmatic way, describing a perverse sky, where everything is upside down. The man is intrigued by her, but also confused by her bizarre behavior and mannerisms.
Throughout the song, the woman seems to be ethereal and otherworldly, living in her own reality. She sings and cries like a performer, and speaks in a way that suggests she is playing a role. The man is fascinated by her, but ultimately realizes that she is not what he thought she was. The woman leaves him, and he reflects on his experience, realizing that not everything is as it seems.
The song is a reflection on the uncertainty and chaos of life, and the idea that people are not always who they appear to be. The woman represents the unknown and the unfamiliar, and the man's encounter with her teaches him to question his assumptions and expectations.

Je suis encore pucelle
I am still a virgin

And I'm truly only here
Que par enchantement
By enchantment
Et l'inconnue parla
And the unknown woman spoke
Comme on parle aux navires
Like one speaks to ships
Dans les ports orgueilleux
In the proud ports
Que les départs déchirent
That departures tear apart
Je restais là comme un dadais
I stood there like an idiot
Elle était belle comme un cygne
She was beautiful like a swan

Ça n'était pas c' que je croyais
It wasn't what I thought

In the meantime, I played the innocent
Dis-moi, fille du Nord,
Tell me, girl from the North,
Avec ton air bizarre
With your strange demeanor
Et tes façons barbares
And your barbarous ways
Tu serais mieux dehors
You would be better off outside
Je sais, répondit-elle,
I know,
J'ai tort d'être pucelle
I'm wrong to be a virgin
Crois-moi en vérité
Believe me, truly
C'est ma célébrité
It's my notoriety
Et l'inconnue chanta
And the unknown woman sang
Comme on chante à l'église
Like one sings in church
Les dimanches matin
On Sunday mornings
Aux messes des marquises
At the masses of the marquesses
La chambre était au paradis
The room was in paradise
D'un vieil hôtel à luminaire
In an old hotel with luminaries
Où l'on cultive la chimère
Where one cultivates the chimera
En y mettant un peu le prix
By putting in a little money
C'est une chose épouvantable
It's a terrible thing
On était presque au petit matin
It was almost dawn
J'avais beau lui faire un dessin
I tried to explain to her
Elle voulait pas se mettre à table
She wouldn't sit at the table
Dis-moi, fille du Nord,
Tell me, girl from the North,
Avec tes airs primaires
With your primary appearance
Tu me la bailles amère
You give it to me sour
Je ne suis plus d'accord
I don't agree anymore
Tant pis, répondit-elle,
Too bad, she replied,
Si je reste pucelle
If I remain a virgin
La fin te le dira
The end will tell you
Alors, tu comprendras
Then, you will understand
Et l'inconnue pleura
And the unknown woman cried
Comme on pleure au théâtre
Like one cries at the theater
En voyant des pantins
When seeing puppets
Se foutre des emplâtres
Poking fun at the troubles of others
On croit trouver une âme sœur
One thinks they found a soul mate
Et l'on récolte une vestale
And instead, they find a vestal virgin
Qui vient vous faire la morale
Who comes to give you moral advice
Dans un hôtel sans ascenseur
In a hotel without an elevator
J'en étais là de mes pensées
That's where my thoughts were
J'ai senti sa main sur mes yeux
I felt her hand on my eyes
Tout comme un truc miraculeux
Like something miraculous
Et la dame s'est en allée
And the lady left
Dis-moi, fille du Nord,
Tell me, girl from the North,
Hélas, adieu romance
Alas, farewell romance
A peine ça commence
It barely began
On change de décor
The scenery changes
J' croyais que ces demoiselles
I thought that these ladies
N'étaient jamais pucelles
Were never virgins
Et puis, sait-on jamais,
And then, who knows,
A une exception près
There's always an exception
Et la vierge lassée
And the tired virgin
Partit sans m'avoir eu
Left without having me
Ça n'était qu'un soldat
It was just a soldier
De l'Armée du Salut!
Of the Salvation Army!
