As If by Magic
La Roux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Emerging from my world
Imagine living in a box
And I won't come up
Until I've broken all the locks
Slurring all my words
Until something sticks
But in this smoky universe
My mind keeps playing tricks

And although, you're the only home I know
As if by magic, thoughts of you are gone
And now, I'm keeping my head in the clouds
And it's not so tragic, if I don't look down
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oooooo [x2]

Submerging from your world
And back into my bliss
A day rolled into one
Is burning on my lips
Blurring all your words
Until they don't exist
And in a parallel universe
It's me you can't resist

And although, you're the only home I know
As if by magic, thoughts of you are gone
And now, I'm keeping my head in the clouds
And it's not so tragic, if I don't look down
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oooooo [x2]

And although, you're the only home I know
As if by magic, thoughts of you are gone
And now, I'm keeping my head in the clouds

And it's not so tragic, if I don't look down
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oooooo [x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to La Roux's song "As If By Magic" describe a state of mind where the singer finds herself emerging from her world and breaking free from her own limitations. She likens her previous state to living in a box and locking herself out of the world. However, she has now broken free of the locks and is slurring her words until something sticks. In her new state of mind, she is submerging herself back into her world where her day is rolling into one and burning on her lips. She is blurring all the words of the outside world until they don't exist, and her mind keeps playing tricks on her.

The refrain "And although, you're the only home I know, as if by magic, thoughts of you are gone" expresses a bittersweet feeling of leaving something comfortable behind in order to grow. The singer is leaving behind someone or something that has been a home to her, but at the same time, she is breaking free from whatever was holding her back. She is keeping her head in the clouds and not looking down, which could be interpreted as her not wanting to face reality just yet. In the end, the lyrics suggest that there is a sense of relief in leaving the past behind and moving forward, even though it may be scary.

I love that this follows "Cover My Eyes" on the record. I alternate between them when old feelings flare up. It's the emotional equivalent of when Fezzik is pushing Inigo's face into the buckets of hot and cold water.

this is just the song you listen to when you say you are fine but you are anything but fine

I bought the album by chance as I saw it for £1 in Poundland, and had heard that La Roux were a bit Synth-poppy, which is the kind of stuff I like. What a fortuitous purchase that was. This is now one of my favourite albums. This track along with Fascination are simply fantastic. More than worth the £1 I spent. 😎
