Labradford consists of bassist Robert Donne, guitarist/vocalist Mark Nelson, and Carter Brown on keyboards. Their music style is ambient post-rock, although their earlier releases such as "Prazision" and "A Stable Reference" were much more related to drone rock.
In 1993 they released their debut album on Kranky which has remained their home since. The group's music mostly drifts on the guitar effects and the keyboard passages, with the vocals, when present, in the background.
In 1999 they started a tour with Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their Festival of Drifting series, which featured appearances from Pole, Matmos, Papa M and Sigur Rós.
Though the group has not officially disbanded, they have not released another album since 2001's critically acclaimed Fixed::Context, and the band members have apparently moved away from their former base of Richmond, Virginia. Robert Donne has joined the slowcore group Spokane. Mark Nelson continues to release records on Kranky under the name Pan•American.

Star City Russia
Labradford Lyrics

To laugh away
I raise [?]
I laughed for
I laugh seamlessly
I laugh too
I look astray
I [?] too
I thought of
Outside and open
Interpreting Labradford's song Star City Russia is quite complex as the lyrics are poetic and ambiguous. The song creates a mood and an atmosphere that is open to interpretation. The lyrics seem to describe a state of mind in which the singer is searching for something beyond their grasp. The lyrics "I said oh why" and "I raise?" speak to the feelings of confusion and questioning that are present throughout the song.
The singer then goes on to talk about their laughter, leading the listener to assume that the singer is perhaps trying to mask their feelings of confusion and questioning with laughter. The lyrics "I laugh seamlessly" and "I laugh too" speaks to the idea that the laughter is not genuine, but rather a facade to hide deeper feelings. The lyrics "I look astray" and "I thought of outside and open" further convey the sense of searching for something beyond what is immediately available.
Ultimately, the song seems to be about a search for meaning and purpose in life, and the struggle to find it amidst confusion and doubt.
