Out With A Bang
Lana Del Rey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Box of broken laces, lined up in an order
I'll do what you tell me, we can have it your way
I'll tell you the future, you tell me your story
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
Smiles from the stranger, seem to change a day when
You were just about to go and throw your towel in
Lately I've been thinking about making changes
It's been on my mind for some time and I'm anxious
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
Scowling like the sunshine, set on Sarasota
Happy like a twister over Oklahoma
Clear as Penny Mason lying in a coma
This is our feeling, all my hurt is over
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
I'm going out with a bang
Meet me in the morning, wrap your arms around me
Tell me that it's over, now that you have found me
Walk me to the river, see the willow bowing
Carry me into the water, now we're drowning
We're going out with a bang
We're going out with a bang
We're going out with a bang
We're going to go home again
The lyrics to Lana Del Rey's "Out With A Bang" are about embracing change and living life to the fullest. The opening lines describe little bits and pieces falling to the corners, which suggests something old and worn out. The box of broken laces lined up in an order symbolizes a futile attempt to put things back together. The next lines show the singer's willingness to follow another's lead and to exchange stories for the knowledge of the future. It's a metaphor for blindly following someone who seems to know what they're doing, even if she doesn't understand it all.
The chorus "I'm going out with a bang" is a declaration of the singer's desire to live life to the fullest, to make big changes, and to be remembered for something meaningful. She wants to leave a lasting impression on the world, to make an impact, and achieve her goals. The smiles from a stranger can change a day, and this realization encourages the singer to take chances and make bold moves.
The bridge of the song is ambiguous, touching on the darkness of scowling and the happiness of a twister over Oklahoma. The clear as Penny Mason lying in a coma is an interesting twist as it suggests that the singer can see clearly now that all her pain is gone. The final lines of the bridge are optimistic, suggesting a brighter future and that everything is going to be alright. The closing verse is about the end of a relationship and the metaphorical drowning of one's past, which emphasizes the idea that living life to the fullest may require leaving things behind.
