I only put you in a box
'cause you're giving me a head rush
I only want your love, I want your love
Want your love i'm a lion in a party dress
I won't stop until I get the best
Yeah-yea-yea yeah
Everyone's one true love on the side
(Love on the side, love on the side)
Everybody knows I'm American, baby
Watching me dance while you get h-high
(Get h-high, get h-high)
Everybody knows they call me trouble, baby
One of us comes from the white trash side
(White trash side, white trash side)
I'm everything you want but
It's hard to decide
'Cause everybody wants true love on the side
Love on the side, love on the side
Yeah-yea-yea yeah
I only put you down 'cause I want you so much
I only put you in a box
'cause you're giving me a head rush
I only want your love, I want your love
Want your love i'm a lion in a party dress
I won't stop until I get the best
Yeah-yea-yea yeah
Everybody knows they call me Brooklyn baby
Everyone's one true love on the side
(Love on the side, love on the side)
Everybody knows I'm American, baby
Watching me dance while you get h-high
(Get h-high, get h-high)
Everybody knows they call me trouble, baby
One of us comes from the white trash side
(White trash side, white trash side)
I'm everything you want but
It's hard to decide
'Cause everybody wants true love on the side
Love on the side, love on the side
(Tell me when)
You try to get away but it can't be denied
'Cause everybody wants true love on the side
I'm everything you want but
It's hard to decide
'Cause everybody wants true love on the side
Yeah-yea-yea yeah
Everybody knows they call me Brooklyn baby
Everyone's one true love on the side

The lyrics of Lana Del Rey's song "True Love On The Side" delve into themes of desire, self-awareness, and societal expectations. The singer expresses conflicted feelings towards their object of affection, acknowledging their strong desire for them while also recognizing the limitations and constraints of their relationship. The lyrics "I only put you down 'cause I want you so much" suggest a complex dynamic of yearning and perhaps a sense of inadequacy or insecurity on the part of the singer.
The mention of putting the other person in a box because they provide a rush hints at the idea of trying to contain or categorize their emotions, possibly to make sense of the intense feelings they are experiencing. The repeated declaration of wanting the other person's love emphasizes the central theme of yearning and longing for connection, despite the challenges and complexities that may arise.
The references to being a "lion in a party dress" and not stopping until getting the best evoke images of a fierce and determined persona, someone who is willing to pursue their desires relentlessly. The contrast between the glamorous image presented and the acknowledgment of coming from a "white trash side" suggests a duality within the singer, a mix of grandeur and vulnerability.
The chorus, with its repetition of "Everybody wants true love on the side", underscores the universal nature of seeking love and connection, even if it means existing in a state of ambiguity or hidden desires. The lyrics capture the internal conflict of wanting someone intensely while also grappling with external perceptions and societal norms. Overall, "True Love On The Side" delves into the complexities of desire, self-perception, and the quest for love in a world where expectations and realities often clash.
