A native of Danville, Kentucky[1], Harris started playing the piano by age 9. His first formal vocal training came when he attended college at Western Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1969. He later became a part of the popular Gospel touring group "The Spurlows." He gained fame with both his solo work, and his work as part of the Gaither Vocal Band, headed by Gospel musician and recording executive Bill Gaither.
His many live and televised appearances include Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The 700 Club, several Billy Graham crusades, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, numerous Gaither Homecoming shows, and his own Christmas special. In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Harris has made many appearances on the WHAS Crusade for Children, a long-running local telethon benefitting children's charities.
Of his many chart-topping songs, perhaps his best-known are his duets with Sandi Patty called, "More than Wonderful" and "I've Just Seen Jesus." His song, "Mighty Spirit" was featured in a 1993 television campaign for the Points of Light Foundation, headed by President George H. W. Bush; he performed the song for Bush and his wife Barbara at the White House.
Harris has received an honorary doctorate of music from Campbellsville University in central Kentucky. He was inducted into the Western Kentucky University Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993.
Harris, his wife Cynthia, and children Lonnie and Teresa have lived in Louisville for more than three decades. Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer. Harris is well-known within the Gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.

Go Tell It On The Mountain
Larnelle Harris Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Go tell it on the mountains
Tell it over and over those hills and everywhere
Go tell it, tell it on the mountain
Say, my Jesus, say that Jesus
Tell them Jesus Christ is born
Well now, over the hills and everywhere
Go and tell it on the mountain (tell it, tell it on the mountain)
That Jesus Christ is born
(Yes, He's born, said, He's born)
(Yes, He's born, Jesus, Jesus)
Now when I was a seeker, I sought both night and day
And I asked the Lord to help me and He showed me the way
(Show me, show me)
Well, now go (go), go and tell it on the mountain
Well, now over the hills and everywhere (over the hills and everywhere)
You can go (go), go tell it on the mountains
That Jesus, Jesus Christ is born (Jesus Christ is born)
Yes, He's born
(Yes, He's born, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus)
Well, now He made me a watchman (made me a watchman)
Upon the city wall (ooh)
And though I am a Christian (though I am a Christian )
I am the least of all
Now I must go tell it on the mountain
Well now, over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is (Jesus Christ is)
Jesus Christ is born (go tell it on the mountain)
Go tell that He's born (go tell it on the mountain, mountain
He's born
The lyrics to Larnelle Harris's song "Go Tell It On The Mountain" speak of the command to spread the news of Jesus Christ's birth. The song begins with a repetition of "Go tell it on the mountains," emphasizing the urgency and importance of spreading the message. The phrase is then followed by "Tell it over and over those hills and everywhere," reinforcing the idea that the news should be shared far and wide.
The chorus continues with the directive to "tell it on the mountain" and specifically mentions saying "Jesus Christ is born." This line emphasizes the central message of the song, highlighting the birth of Jesus as a significant and joyous event. The repetition of "Tell them Jesus Christ is born" further emphasizes the importance of sharing this news with others.
The second verse shifts to a personal reflection, as the singer talks about their own experience as a seeker. They mention seeking for answers both day and night and asking the Lord for help. The lyrics suggest that the Lord showed them the way, possibly referencing finding faith in Jesus.
The third verse introduces the idea that the singer has been made a watchman on the city wall. This imagery represents a responsibility to watch over and protect the community. The lyrics acknowledge that although the singer is a Christian, they consider themselves to be the least of all. This could be an expression of humility and recognizing their own imperfections.
Overall, the lyrics of "Go Tell It On The Mountain" portray a call to action to share the news of Jesus Christ's birth with enthusiasm and persistence. It emphasizes the importance of spreading the message far and wide and highlights personal reflections on seeking faith and fulfilling the role of a watchman.
