A native of Danville, Kentucky[1], Harris started playing the piano by age 9. His first formal vocal training came when he attended college at Western Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1969. He later became a part of the popular Gospel touring group "The Spurlows." He gained fame with both his solo work, and his work as part of the Gaither Vocal Band, headed by Gospel musician and recording executive Bill Gaither.
His many live and televised appearances include Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The 700 Club, several Billy Graham crusades, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, numerous Gaither Homecoming shows, and his own Christmas special. In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Harris has made many appearances on the WHAS Crusade for Children, a long-running local telethon benefitting children's charities.
Of his many chart-topping songs, perhaps his best-known are his duets with Sandi Patty called, "More than Wonderful" and "I've Just Seen Jesus." His song, "Mighty Spirit" was featured in a 1993 television campaign for the Points of Light Foundation, headed by President George H. W. Bush; he performed the song for Bush and his wife Barbara at the White House.
Harris has received an honorary doctorate of music from Campbellsville University in central Kentucky. He was inducted into the Western Kentucky University Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993.
Harris, his wife Cynthia, and children Lonnie and Teresa have lived in Louisville for more than three decades. Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer. Harris is well-known within the Gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.

King Jesus is His Name
Larnelle Harris Lyrics

That Bethlehem has a little baby
Born in a stable late one night
Underneath a sky so starry bright
The star made a night to shine like the day
And the shepherds came to bring Him praise
Wise men brought Him beautiful gifts
They brought gold, myrrh, and frankincense
What did they call that little bitty baby?
King Jesus is His name
Well, what did the heavenly host proclaim?
King Jesus is His name
Well, tell me who would've thought this tiny lad
Would hold all power in His hands?
Tell me, what did they call Him?
King Jesus is His name
Well, the people came from all around
They knelt in awe of this King they found
The manger held such a holy sight
This gift from Heaven would bring them life
Life forever in a Heavenly place
For every nation, color, every creed and race
This little baby's gonna change the world
In the hearts of men, women, boys, and girls
What did they call that little bitty baby?
King Jesus is His name
What did the heavenly host proclaim?
King Jesus is His name
Well, tell me, who would've thought this tiny lad
Would hold all power in His hands?
Tell me, what did they call Him?
King Jesus is His name
King Jesus is His name
Well, the people came from all around
They knelt in awe of this King they found
The manger held such a holy sight
The manger held eternal life
What did they call that little bitty baby?
King Jesus is His name
Well, what did the heavenly host proclaim?
King Jesus is His name
Well, tell me, who would've thought this tiny lad
Would hold all power in His hands?
Tell me, what did they call Him?
King Jesus is His name
What did they call that little bitty baby?
King Jesus is His name
What did the heavenly host proclaim?
King Jesus is His name
Well, tell me, who would've thought this tiny lad
Would hold all power in His hands?
Tell me, what did they call Him
King Jesus is His name
What did they call that little bitty baby? (Ooh, tell me what they called Him?)
King Jesus is His name
(Tell me what they called Him?)
The lyrics of Larnelle Harris's song "In His Name" tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. The song starts by urging listeners to spread the news of the baby's birth, emphasizing that this miraculous event took place in a stable under a starry sky. The shepherds and wise men are mentioned, symbolizing different groups of people who recognized the significance of Jesus. The shepherds came to worship Him, while the wise men brought extravagant gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense.
The chorus asks the question, "What did they call that little bitty baby?" and answers with "King Jesus is His name." This reinforces the belief that the baby Jesus was not an ordinary child but a king. The heavenly host is mentioned, alluding to the angels who announced Jesus' birth and proclaimed Him as King Jesus. The song expresses wonder at how a tiny baby could hold such power and how His name would change the world.
The second verse repeats the story, emphasizing the impact Jesus would have on all people regardless of their nationality, color, or creed. It highlights the transformative power of Jesus' birth and how it brings eternal life to those who believe in Him. The chorus is repeated, once again affirming that Jesus is called King Jesus.
Overall, "In His Name" celebrates the birth of Jesus and conveys the message that Jesus is not just a baby, but the King who holds power to change lives and bring salvation.
