D… Read Full Bio ↴Laura Fygi (born August 27, 1955, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch singer.
Daughter to a Dutch father, a manager at Philips, and an Egyptian mother, a belly dancer by profession, Fygi lived with her parents in South America for the first eight years of her life.
Between 1987 and 1991, she was a member of popular Dutch girl-band, Centerfold. During performances, the trio dressed themselves in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe, and were equally famous in Japan.
In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Fygi (together with Rowan Moore) started a band called The Backlot. After one performance in Dutch theatre Paradiso, an album was expected, but Mercury Records had already asked Fygi to make a solo album. This first album, Introducing Laura Fygi, comprised mostly jazz numbers, and was produced by Ruud Jacobs. In the album, Fygi was accompanied by celebrated Belgian musician Toots Thielemans.
Guess Who I Saw Today

From the office
Did you miss your train?
Where you caught in the rain?
No, don't bother to explain
Can I fix you a quick martini?
As a matter of fact
I'll have one with you
I've had quite a day too
Guess who I saw today, my dear
I went in town to shop around
For something new
And thought I'd stop and have a bite
When I was through
I looked around for someplace near
And it occurred to me
Where I had parked the car
Tehre is a most attractive
French cafe and bar
It really wasn't very far
The waiter showed me to a dark
Secluded corner
And when my eyes became
Accustomed to the gloom
I saw two people at the bar
Who were so much in love
That even I could spot it clear
Across the room
Guess who I saw today, my dear
I've never been so shocked before
I headed blindly for the door
They didn't see me passing through
Guess who I saw today?
Guess who I saw today?
Guess who I saw today?
I saw you
In Laura Fygi's song "Guess Who I Saw Today," the singer is addressing her partner, who has just arrived home late from work. She offers to make them both a quick martini and reveals that she has had a difficult day herself. The focus of the song then shifts to the singer's trip into town where she stumbled upon a charming French café and bar near where she had parked her car. The waiter seats her in a secluded corner, where she soon notices a couple at the bar who were "so much in love that even I could spot it clear across the room." The singer's shock comes when she realizes that the person her partner is having an affair with is the same person she saw in the café. The song ends with the repeated phrase "Guess who I saw today?" leaving the listener with the implication that the relationship is over.
The song's lyrics are an excellent example of narrative storytelling. The singer tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end, keeping the listener engaged and curious about what will happen next. The song's structure is a classic example of the ballad form, where the singer tells a story with a moral or message. The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has been in a relationship and had their heart broken.
