D… Read Full Bio ↴Laura Fygi (born August 27, 1955, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch singer.
Daughter to a Dutch father, a manager at Philips, and an Egyptian mother, a belly dancer by profession, Fygi lived with her parents in South America for the first eight years of her life.
Between 1987 and 1991, she was a member of popular Dutch girl-band, Centerfold. During performances, the trio dressed themselves in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe, and were equally famous in Japan.
In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Fygi (together with Rowan Moore) started a band called The Backlot. After one performance in Dutch theatre Paradiso, an album was expected, but Mercury Records had already asked Fygi to make a solo album. This first album, Introducing Laura Fygi, comprised mostly jazz numbers, and was produced by Ruud Jacobs. In the album, Fygi was accompanied by celebrated Belgian musician Toots Thielemans.
The Nearness of You
Laura Fygi Lyrics

That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
All my wildest dreams come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you
Laura Fygi's song The Nearness Of You is a love song about the importance of physical proximity. The opening lines suggest that it is not simply the romantic symbolism of the pale moon that excites the singer, but rather the actual physical closeness of the person they love. This is further emphasised in the second verse, where the singer declares that it is not even the content of their partner's speech that excites them, but simply the nearness of their presence.
The chorus is the crux of the song, where the singer speaks of the transformative power of physical connection. When they are in the arms of their lover, they feel that their wildest dreams have come true. The refrain implies that they do not need any external stimuli or props to enjoy this feeling - they simply need the physical proximity of their partner.
The final verses reinforce this idea, with the singer asking for the right to hold their lover tightly and feel the nearness of them. Ultimately, the song suggests that the beauty and wonder of love is not just about emotional connection, but also the physical experience of being near the person we love.
