Old World
Leah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Names upon a stone, standing still
They scream in dark light, hollow sounds
Wicked games they played in the winter chill
And pierced the city walls tonight

In this old world, time is standing still

Chains around a chair, ring on the floor
Burned to the ground, bright as dawn
Riches betrayed, knowledge decayed
And breeched the royal halls, tonight

In this old world, time is standing still .

Once upon a time, in a distant story
Vanishing faces one by one
Marching to the drum of a little revenge
And never to be seen when the time has come

In this old world, time is standing still .

Overall Meaning

In Leah's song "Old World", the lyrics describe a world that has witnessed some of its darkest moments. The "names upon a stone" that "scream in dark light, hollow sounds" hint at a graveyard or perhaps a monument that memorializes casualties of war or tragedy that marked the world's history. The second stanza continues with the imagery of destruction as it describes "chains around a chair" and riches betrayed, knowledge decayed and royal halls breached. The language used alludes to war, treason and destruction that seems to have been caused by wicked games played during winter. The song describes a world that has frozen in time, as if to remember the pain and suffering that it has endured.

The last stanza adds some more details to the story describing vanishing faces, marching to the drum of little revenge, and never to be seen when the time has come. The lyrics are mysterious yet evocative, hinting at a forgotten history plagued by war and loss, that still haunts the world long after it has ended. Leah's beautiful voice and the haunting instrumentation only serve to amplify the impact of the lyrics.

This is beautiful. I stumbled across this while listening to Amon Amarth. Two different cultures, but both perfect. You have a new fan.
