Treasure Map
Lemon Demon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Happily this afternoon,
Along the beach I waddle,
Looking at the sand,
I spy an old, forgotton bottle.

I scoop it up, and look at it,
My eyes go big and wide,
For heavens yes, there seems to be,
A treasure map inside.

Somwhere at the tail-end,
Of this twisty dotted line,
A chest of gold awaits,
And soon it's going to be mine.

I buy a sturdy shovel,
Since the treasure will be deep,
I buy expensive boots,
Because my old ones are too cheap.

I buy a fancy compass,
And a treasure hunting cap,
And off I set into the forest,
Eyes upon my map.

So carefully I trace the pathway,
Every little bend,
It's almost getting dark,
Before at last i reach the end.

I'm so excited, I can't help,
but do a little jig.
I calm myself, take out my shovel,
And proceed to dig.

I dig and dig, and dig and dig
Until my hands begin to hurt
Then finally! My teasure chest,
All worn and caked in dirt.

But when I look inside the chest,
I only find a note,
Upon it is the simple little message,
And I quote:

"Everybody wants to find a buried treasure chest,
But noone wants to bury one,
If you do,
Be my guest"

- Pirates are assholes.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lemon Demon's song Treasure Map tell the playful story of a character who finds a treasure map inside an old bottle on the beach. Excited by the discovery, he sets off on a treasure hunt deep into the forest, buying equipment like a sturdy shovel, expensive boots, a compass, and a treasure hunting cap. He follows the twisty, dotted line on the map until he finally reaches the end but all he finds inside the chest is a note with a message that implies that people only want to find buried treasure and not be the ones who bury them. The song's ironic twist at the end subverts the usual treasure hunter narrative, which makes it a fun song to listen to and analyze.

The song's protagonist embodies the spirit of adventure, wonder and excitement, which is often associated with treasure hunting. His journey is full of anticipation as he meticulously follows the treasure map, digs carefully, and savors the promise of seeing the gold with his own eyes. Yet, the song's message critiques the selfishness of those who hunt for treasures, revealing that the urge to hoard wealth often comes at a cost to others.
