Space Walk
Lemon Jelly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"The hatch is coming open. Okay. It's open."
"Verified."
"I'm moving outside. Okay, I'm letting go."
"Copy that."
"I'm starting to drift away. It really is dark out here."
"How am I doing?"
"You're doing fine."
"I'm beginning to see a uh, point of light on the horizon.
It's, uhh, getting larger.
I'm... I'm getting some breakout oscillations. Oh, it's coming quicker now. It's really going. Any second now. Here we go. And uh, woah! Heh heh. Woo boy! That really is something. Oh, that's tremendous. Well that, that's just uh, beautiful."

"Beautiful, beautiful, just beautiful"

"Zero G's, I don't mind"
"And it looks good to me"
"Reading you loud and clear"
"Feel like a million dollars"
"Roger"
"You are going to descent"
"That's decent"

"I can almost make out the surface"
"Looking great, here we go"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lemon Jelly's song Space Walk describe an astronaut's journey into space. The song begins with the astronaut opening the hatch and venturing outside, remarking on the darkness and the distant light on the horizon. As the astronaut starts to experience some turbulence or "breakout oscillations," their excitement and awe become palpable. The chorus declares, "Zero G's, I don't mind / And it looks good to me / Reading you loud and clear / Feel like a million dollars / Roger."

The song continues with the astronaut approaching the surface of a planet or moon, with the ground crew providing encouragement: "You are going to descent / That's decent / I can almost make out the surface / Looking great, here we go." The final line, "Beautiful, beautiful, just beautiful," seems to capture the astronaut's feelings of wonder and amazement at the spectacle of space.

About 10 years ago I was watching a video on my worn out laptop when a wonderful electronic song with audio samples from an astronaut began playing. Unfortunately, before I could ID the song with a an app my computer crashed. I was unable to restore the webpage once I logged back in nor was I able to reidentify the webpage (was using Incognito mode), so I wrote the lyrics down as best I could remember them. Alas the insufficiently fidelitous recollection of the phrase resulted in much fruitless questing.

I've begun toe really delve into electronic music over the past year and heard mention of Lemon Jelly numerous times (most recently in relation to ODESZA's new track "North Garden") in the past few weeks and finally decided to sit down and listen to them while completing some work on the computer. Not 10 minutes into this pleasant experience and a particular audio sample stirred a faint sense of nostalgia which gradually gave rise to a clearer and clearer auditory memory. I opened the Word document that serves as the reliquary for all my musical knowledge , scrolled to the very bottom, and read this phrase: "And I'm stepping out now. I see this beautiful speck of light on the horizon. And it's growing larger now. It's beautiful, beautiful...."

I've never been a believer in kismet, but I can't escape the gnawing sensation I've just had a brush with destiny.

This song is so pure. Pure bliss. Great vibes. I even get chills. Life is beautiful. That's the reason I'm here. To tell you that life is beautiful. And if you don't believe me, listen to the song again. Beautiful, just beautiful. I feel like a million dollars.

Amen good sir. I fully agree. Very uplifting.

thanks😆

@giant781

I just found out that the "beautiful" in this song is sampled from Jim McDivitt saying to Ed White " you look beautiful out there" outside the window during his spacewalk. In a way that human connection makes me love this song more than if it was just a guy describing a view.

@ginamills2183
