Day In-Day Out
Lena Horne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day in, day out
The same old hoodoo follows me about
The same old pounding in my heart whenever I think of you
And, darling, I think of you
Day in and day out

Day out, day in
I needn't tell you how my days begin
When I awake, I awaken with a tingle
One possibility in view
That possibility of maybe seeing you

Come rain, come shine
I meet you and to me the day is fine
Then I kiss your lips
And the pounding becomes
The ocean's roar
A thousand drums
Can't you see it's love
Can there be any doubt

When there it is
Day in, day out

Overall Meaning

In Lena Horne's song "Day in Day Out" the lyricist portrays a person who is constantly haunted by the memories of an old flame. The persistent "hoodoo" (a term meaning bad luck or a curse) follows the person day in day out, causing an intense pounding in the heart whenever the person thinks of the former lover. Despite the constant ache, the person cannot seem to shake off the memories and keeps thinking of the lover day in and day out.

The second verse speaks of the heightened anticipation that comes with the possibility of seeing the lover. The singer wakes up with a "tingle" and all thoughts lead to the possibility of seeing the former flame. Once they finally meet, the joy is palpable, and everything suddenly becomes alright. The kiss sets off a flood of emotions, and the pounding of the heart is compared to the sound of a thousand drums or the roar of an ocean - a clear indication that the love between them is deep and passionate.

Overall, the song expresses the pain and joy that is associated with loving someone intensely. Even when the person is gone, their memory lingers and causes a constant ache that can never truly be healed.

Yup 👍🏽

Never understood how she achieved stardom/success as a singer

@Arlene Cerf Is that you Gail? Please spare me this talent lie…Lena owed any success she had to Mr. Lennie Hayton, the white/Jewish man she married, because not only could she not sing; she couldn’t act either. Lennie was highly regarded in Hollywood and SHE even admitted she didn’t love him, he was her entry into singing/Vegas. I ain’t mad at Lena; she finagled her way to stardom by any means necessary but it surely wasn’t talent…

Arlene Cerf

Oh please 🙄 She achieved stardom because of her talent and charisma
