On January 26, 1986, French humorist Coluche, who had set up Les Restos du Cœur a few months earlier, invited a number of artists and public figures to appear on television as a promotional move. The band, whose line-up was never the same, was dubbed "Les Enfoirés" in reference to one of Coluche's catchwords. After Coluche died in a motorbike accident (June 19, 1986) his widow, Véronique Colucci, called on those who had participated to continue his actions, and the band was revived for a further television show. The concept has since evolved into an annual concert, bringing together up to forty artists and celebrities from various backgrounds. The funds raised by the concerts and derived records under the name "Enfoirés" are donated to Les Restos du Cœur.
One of the key features of Les Enfoirés is "La Chanson des Enfoirés", a song which became a sort of hymn to the charity, written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, a long-time supporter of the organisation.

On chante, on chante, on chante
Lalala lalala lalala
Lalala lalala lalala
Lalalala
On chante, on chante, on chante
Mm, mmm
The lyrics to Les Enfoirés's song "Et moi je chante" describe a series of vivid and emotive images, expressing both despair and a yearning for happiness. The song touches upon themes of nostalgia, mortality, and the power of music to bring solace.
In the opening verse, the singer envisions a train coming on a cloud from the past, symbolizing a longing to return to happier times. They also see a hand holding flowers without fingers, possibly representing an inability to experience the joy and beauty of life fully. A dog's death is mentioned as a consequence of trying to follow in the singer's footsteps, suggesting the burden of their own struggles. Additionally, winter is personified as smiling at the blue years of the afterlife, signifying the acceptance of aging and the passage of time.
The second verse introduces the sound of rain falling in the garden of magicians, evoking a sense of melancholy. The symphonies played by a thousand musicians emphasize the grandeur and complexity of life. The cry of a gray bird in the distance captures a feeling of longing or solitude. The singer hears life weeping in their memory, indicating a sense of loss or regret for past experiences that cannot be relived.
Throughout the song, the repeated line "Et moi je chante, je chante, je chante" highlights the singer's reliance on music as a form of expression and solace. They admit to not knowing how to do anything else but sing and offer their voice as a means of bringing happiness to others. The final lines of the song emphasize the collective nature of singing and the universal need for this form of catharsis.
Overall, "Et moi je chante" by Les Enfoirés captures the complexities of human emotions, the longing for happiness, and the ability of music to soothe and console.
