They began performing in the early 1980's in alternative spaces such as the Pali-Kao, a squatted factory building in Belleville, Paris. Their first hit single was Marcia Baila off the Rita Mitsouko album, a song about the Argentinian choreographer and dancer Marcia Moretto who had died of cancer in 1981 and with whom they had performed on several occasions. This album was creative and eccentric (produced by Conny Plank, sound engineer and producer of Neu! and Kraftwerk) combining elements of punk, rock, cold electro pop and jazz, and coupled with their colorful, wild, over-the-top image caught the interest of some important anglophone listeners.
American record producer and musician Tony Visconti produced the following two albums, The No Comprendo and Marc et Robert, while polishing and perfecting their sound. The American band Sparks collaborated with them on the latter record and Russell Mael sings lead vocals with Ringer on three tracks, Singing in the Shower, Live in Las Vegas and Hip Kit. These two albums feature both French and English lyrics. The most successful singles were C'est comme ça and Andy.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed most of their music videos in the 1980's and Jean-Luc Godard filmed a short documentary Soigne ta droite about the group during the recording of The No Comprendo in 1986.
On Wednesday November 28th 2007, Fred Chichin died from cancer while the band had just cancelled their previous concert dates in Paris. He was only diagnosed with the disease two months before.

We were the pick of the pack
We were as big as they come
We said we'd never look back
We were financially fine
and we were critically cool
And we were larger than life
and we could break any rule
the way that it was
We said it's all like a dream
Another glass of champagne
I said well you haven't changed
you're just a little more vain
And we could laugh till we cried
about how easy it was
And we could do anything
and be accepted
because that's just the way that it is
the way that it is
I was on the cutting edge
and you were so sharp
We wre like two angels
with a custom built harp
Now we're in neveda
and we're nothing at all
Now we're in nevada
abd it's after the fall
and we're
Live in Las Vegas saturday night
Live in Las Vegas every night
Put your hands together
welcome them
live in Las Vegas
Vegas... Vegas... Vegas...
I got so used to the light and
now I'm here in the dark
I got so used to the caviar
and now there are sharks
We do whatever they want
but they don't know what they want
They just keep ordering drinks
and yelling hey you get off
And that's we way that it is
We were the cream of the crop
We were the pick of the pack
We were as big as they come
We said we'd never look back
But now we are looking back
a couple lifetimes ago
around the poker and blackjack
And now on with the show
And that's the way that it is
In the song "Live in Las Vegas", Les Rita Mitsouko reminisces on a past time when they were at the height of their career. The lyrics describe how they were once the best of the best, with their success taking them to the top and allowing them to live a very lavish lifestyle. They reminisce on how they used to be able to do whatever they wanted and were accepted, but now that they have fallen from their fame, they are no longer the same. They are now finding themselves in a very different place, playing in Las Vegas and being seen as nothing. The song shows the contrast between what they once were, and what they have become.
The lyrics offer an intriguing insight into the life of artists who have attained successful heights before suddenly losing it. It is a sad realization that what was once an extravagant and carefree lifestyle is now gone, as they’re forced to face the harsh realities of the industry. They no longer reign supreme, forced to face the shifting tides of the industry and its ever-evolving standards.
