They began performing in the early 1980's in alternative spaces such as the Pali-Kao, a squatted factory building in Belleville, Paris. Their first hit single was Marcia Baila off the Rita Mitsouko album, a song about the Argentinian choreographer and dancer Marcia Moretto who had died of cancer in 1981 and with whom they had performed on several occasions. This album was creative and eccentric (produced by Conny Plank, sound engineer and producer of Neu! and Kraftwerk) combining elements of punk, rock, cold electro pop and jazz, and coupled with their colorful, wild, over-the-top image caught the interest of some important anglophone listeners.
American record producer and musician Tony Visconti produced the following two albums, The No Comprendo and Marc et Robert, while polishing and perfecting their sound. The American band Sparks collaborated with them on the latter record and Russell Mael sings lead vocals with Ringer on three tracks, Singing in the Shower, Live in Las Vegas and Hip Kit. These two albums feature both French and English lyrics. The most successful singles were C'est comme ça and Andy.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed most of their music videos in the 1980's and Jean-Luc Godard filmed a short documentary Soigne ta droite about the group during the recording of The No Comprendo in 1986.
On Wednesday November 28th 2007, Fred Chichin died from cancer while the band had just cancelled their previous concert dates in Paris. He was only diagnosed with the disease two months before.
Perfect Eyes
Les Rita Mitsouko Lyrics

are coming to the scene
All the perfect eyes of science
are going down my dream
I'm very dangerous
I forgot my soul
you said
I'm not a divin world
You make me understand
You make me understand
all the difficulties you see
I'm very very ill
come on
Let's go out
Let's go on
Let's go eat right now
Wait in heaven and see
Let's go back abraod
And far bakcward
And you're very tired of love
and me
And it's hard to find
a little lesson of love
Ô the perfect eyes of science
are blinking and they're green
We're walkin in silence
as little simple things
I saw you on a photograph
You forgot my soul
Ô the perfect eyes of sciecne
are sleeping in between
We're walkin in silence
You're beautiful and dangerous
you forget my soul
I'm very very ill
The song "Perfect Eyes" by Les Rita Mitsouko is a mysterious and somewhat cryptic piece that revolves around the theme of duality and the balance between science and spirituality. The lyrics are a juxtaposition of different ideas, such as the "perfect eyes of science" and the "difficulty of finding a little lesson of love". The singer of the song seems to be struggling with their own identity, torn between rationality and emotions, sanity and insanity, the physical and the spiritual worlds.
The first verse of the song sets the melancholic tone of the song, introducing the recurring theme of the "perfect eyes of science". The singer seems to be overwhelmed by these eyes and feels their presence in their dreams. The next lines suggest a feeling of detachment from reality, and a struggle to define oneself. The second verse presents a more hopeful perspective, as the singer suggests going out and enjoying life, but this is short-lived, as they soon confront the difficulties of love.
The final verse brings the song to a close with a sense of peace, as the singer sees the "perfect eyes of science" as sleeping and once again emphasizes the importance of spirituality: "You forget my soul". Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on the tension between science and spirituality, and the confusion that arises when these two worlds collide.
