He Was Beautiful
Lesley Garrett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From the moment I saw him the sun filled the sky.
He was so, so beautiful; beautiful just to hold
In my dreams he was springtime, winter was cold.
How could I tell him what I so clearly could see?
Though I longed for him another trusted me completely
So I never could be free
I will always remember moments we shared.
Now it's all over still the feelings linger on
For my dream keeps returning now that he's gone.
For it was beautiful, beautiful to be loved
The lyrics to Lesley Garrett's song "He Was Beautiful" convey a bittersweet tale of unrequited love. In the opening lines, the singer describes the object of her affections as beautiful, filling the sky with light from the moment she saw him. The second verse reveals that she longs to express her feelings, but is thwarted by a previous commitment. The poignant line "Though I longed for him another trusted me completely" highlights the singer's inner turmoil and the complexity of human relationships.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the beauty of the moments she shared with the man she loved, even though their relationship was never able to fully blossom. In the end, she finds solace in the fact that she was loved, even though it could never be fully realized.
The song's melancholy melody is perfectly suited to its wistful lyrics, creating a haunting and memorable ballad that has been covered by multiple artists over the years.

Disappointed, as I came here thinking Anton was going to sing... (I don't watch the dancing programmes, and so only know him for the singing) Then as he came up behind the Singer and slowly placed his arms about her, my God; if that had been me, I would have certainly passed out!
