I Dreamed A Dream
Lesley Garrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And I still dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather!

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living

So different now, from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of “I Dreamed a Dream” create a stark contrast between a golden age of kindness and a dystopian present, where dreams have died. The lyrics echo a time when men could be trusted and the world was full of hope and optimism. The song speaks of a time when love was pure and blind to the darkness of the world. As the song continues, we learn of the singer’s dreams and hopes for her life. She expresses an optimism in the forgiving nature of God and makes a direct connection between hope and the joy of living. She dreams of a life where every moment was full of wonder, and no pleasure went unappreciated. She recalls a summer love affair, which seems to have been life-changing for her. She speaks of how this love filled her days with endless wonder and made her feel alive.

However, the second half of the song brings a dramatic change in mood, as the lyrics take an unfortunate turn. The use of the metaphor of “tigers” alludes to danger and the threat of the unknown. These “tigers” not only destroy the singer's hopeful dreams but also create shame and guilt. The lyrics “he was gone when autumn came” reveal the harsh reality of a love that did not last. The singer is now trapped in a living hell, where her dreams have been destroyed. She longs for a life different from the one she is living and deeply mourns the loss of the dream she once had.

Overall, “I Dreamed a Dream” by Lesley Garrett/Paul Daniel/London Session Orchestra is a powerful song about lost hope, lost love, and lost dreams. It captures the essence of life's disappointments and the pain of unmet dreams. However, by expressing these feelings, the singer encourages a sense of empathy and emphasizes the importance of hope, even if that hope is only in our dreams.

✨✨✨what a voice... what an artist, what a woman, I am always fascinated by what this fantastic singer does, this tone that shines through her opera career is so incredibly surprisingly enriching for me, in general I like it not so, but a few can really elevate this glimmer of 'something else' to such an art, Lesley Garrett is one of the very few who can do that, I love and admire her beyond measure and notice, my algorithm and I, we get along great 🤗 in a duet with John Owen - John announced her with the words: THE DEVINE - LESLEY GARRETT; and he's right... ❤️❤️❤️

@ryanwhite7906

watched her performing the 12 days after christmas, with that she brought about a cheeky evilness with it. With this she brought about a emtional vulnerability which is both beautiful and makes you want to cry. This woman really know how to make a song come alive
