Sooner or Later
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sooner Or Later
You′re gonna meet the man that burns your hands with fire
But you know he isn't doing what you′d like to
Picking up the reigns and everything they're holdin'
It′s a long way down

Sooner Or Later
That′s how it is
Whatever made you think your credit lasts for years
Oh no

Sugar
Am I still the one and only in your garden
Does the thought of me in your dream make you smile
Can I feel a certain distance in between us
Or is this dance only mine

Help me
To remember round and turn another page dear
Did we make a contribution to the pile
Even if it's only one man in his place dear
It will be worthwhile

Sooner than later
How it should be
Time fast became the rarest world commodity

I waste a good thing
Good thing I′ve stopped
If I try harder is it too late for us all

And in another place
Another time, another space
Is it any easier

Chance
Another chance is all I ask of you
I'd be so different, I′d be so new
You'd love me, you really know you would
Baby

Sooner than later
How it should be
Time fast became the rarest world commodity

I waste a good thing
Good thing I′ve stopped
If I try harder is it too late for us all

Sooner Or Later
That's how it is
Whatever made you think your credit lasts for years

I waste a good thing

Good thing I've stopped
If I try harder is it too late for us all

Overall Meaning

The song "Sooner or Later" by Level 42 is a reflection on the fleeting nature of time and how it influences our relationships. The lyrics suggest that we all will eventually encounter someone who will hurt us, yet we continue to seek out new relationships, hoping for something different. The first three lines say, "You're gonna meet the man that burns your hands with fire / But you know he isn't doing what you'd like to / Picking up the reigns and everything they're holdin'." This part of the song suggests that we are aware of the risks inherent in relationships, but we still take them and try to make them work.

The song then transitions into a dialogue between lovers. The man wants to know if he still holds a special place in the woman's life. He asks, "Sugar / Am I still the one and only in your garden / Does the thought of me in your dream make you smile / Can I feel a certain distance in between us / Or is this dance only mine." These questions show that he is unsure about where he stands with her and is seeking reassurance. The woman responds by saying, "Help me / To remember round and turn another page dear / Did we make a contribution to the pile / Even if it's only one man in his place dear / It will be worthwhile." She is trying to figure out if their relationship has been meaningful and worth the effort they have put into it.

Overall, "Sooner or Later" is a contemplative look at the nature of relationships, time, and how they are intertwined. The song poses many questions about love and its meaning, yet it remains hopeful that even if we waste a good thing, there may still be a chance to start something new.

I have this concert on DVD & later on in the gig Mark King actually makes a joking comment of " oh look their alive " or something like that, once the audience eventually starts joining in & dancing...

Its not until later on that they start dancing... You have to take into account this is predominately, if not all, original fans & the same age as the members of Level 42 & when they were younger they went wild but now their older & they probably needed a few drinks to get them going as they probably thought they'd look stupid dancing but they do get up & start dancing...

Plus alot of them are now watching the sheer great musicianship of Level 42 & taking that in also... Were as when they were younger they were just drinking & dancing to the song's & not paying much attention to the level of musicianship, even though they knew they were great musician's back when they were younger...

I must admit it's never happened at any of the gigs I've gone to in my older year's as we just go for it right from the first song but some audiences need warming up & coxing a little to get them to just enjoy themselves & not think about anything else other than have a great night dancing away & singing along to their song's...

In light of the coronavirus stay safe and healthy where ever you are in the world...

Cracking bassline. Dont know how the audience could stay so still. Perhaps they were stunned by their brilliance!
