I Wonder What
Lightning & Group Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With two dimensions it's so hard to tell
The eyes can be so deceiving
The road to heaven might be the path to hell
Everybody's got something to do
Everybody everybody but you
The world it keeps on turning
The human spirit the fire within
Yeah it keeps on burning
We're on a mission no one can explain
Not even sure we know why
We keep on pushing until we reach the end
Keeping one eye toward the sky
Everybody's got something to do
Everybody but
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
You wouldn't wanna be left all alone
At least I wouldn't think so
But we've all been working for one goal
I know you'd like to go home
Through all the pain that we've shared
Through every waking hour
No one can survive on their own
Together we have the power
Everybody's got something to do
Everybody but
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
Yeah what do I know
The lyrics of "I Wonder What" by Lightning & Group explore themes of identity, uncertainty, the human condition, and the power of unity. The song begins by questioning the authenticity of individuals and the difficulty in discerning who they truly are. The reference to two dimensions suggests that people often present themselves with different personas, making it hard to determine their true nature. The lyricist highlights the deceptive nature of appearances, emphasizing that one cannot always trust what they see in someone's eyes. Additionally, the line "The road to heaven might be the path to hell" suggests that things are not always as they seem, and what appears to be good or desirable may actually have negative consequences.
The chorus, "Everybody's got something to do, everybody but you," reflects a sense of disconnectedness and exclusion. It implies that while everyone else seems to have a purpose or a role to fulfill, the singer feels left out or uncertain about their own place in the world. This sentiment is further explored in the second verse, where the passing of time and the relentless turning of the world are mentioned. Despite this constant motion, the human spirit is depicted as an enduring flame of hope and determination, continuing to burn within each individual.
The third verse introduces the idea of a collective mission or goal. The purpose of this mission is left undefined, suggesting that even those involved may not fully comprehend its significance. However, the lyrics portray an unwavering commitment to this mysterious objective, with an ever-present awareness of reaching the ultimate destination, symbolized by keeping "one eye toward the sky."
The repetition of the question "Yeah what do I know" throughout the song indicates a sense of self-doubt and questioning. It suggests that despite the lyrics exploring deep philosophical themes, the singer is uncertain about their own understanding and insight. This self-reflexive aspect adds a layer of introspection to the lyrics.
The concluding lines of the song emphasize the importance of unity and support. The shared pain and experiences of individuals are mentioned, highlighting the reliance on one another for survival. The line "Together, we have the power" underscores the strength that can be derived from collective effort and solidarity.
Overall, "I Wonder What" delves into the complexities of identity, the uncertainty of life's purpose, and the resilience of the human spirit. It encourages introspection, challenges conventional notions, and emphasizes the significance of unity in navigating the mysteries and struggles of life.
