Just to clarify, "Long John" is the title of the song. Lightning is the nickname with which the lead singer was called. He sang with a group of Afro-American convicts at Darrington State Prison Farm, Sandy Point, Texas, 1934. It was recorded by John and Alan Lomax.

Paelorian because often times (and this is historically documented), African Americans got arrested for simply saying the wrong thing or being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or being falsely accused and not having any right to defend themselves or go to trial. They simply were sent to prison. And essentially, it’s legal slavery, because these chain gangs would provide the cheapest labor the state could find

Imagine standing out in the fields under the sun... the searing heat feeling like the run is boiling the sweat out of your body, you’re working with a man on a horse holding a shotgun eyeing you down. Temperatures around 100-110 degrees every day 7 days a weeks in the exhausting mentally and physically days on end. No future ahead. A song in the desolate fields to lessen the pain with other mostly futureless inmates in their hell on earth... no pay, no hope, not much for water, no respect in any form, and no women.

I work Landscaping in the Northern California Sierra Foothills in hot temperatures, still after 8 years in the industry like I’m getting nowhere financially, wishing I had better luck. Making just enough to sit get above break even. Now in 2021, approaching Summer, still hoping to for something better. But this isn’t the 1930’s or 40’s, those where truly real “hard times” on a whole different level. My generation will never understand that.

You want to know what really makes this special? They were singing these songs from the true essence of their soul, their purity comes from purity, not for the entertainment of an audience like we are accustomed to. That is why it is extremely difficult to find such remarkable, and I mean truly remarkable talent and uniqueness. Singing from some place that is difficult to reach in today's world of materialism, Doing the only thing they can to pass the time while grasping the only feeling close to that of freedom. When the world around them gave everything it had to break their spirit no matter it be the harsh labor, weather, & treatment they were not completely broken. I swear by this, music holds your soul when nothing is left. Those of you who may be reading this that have endured their own harsh realities will understand this more than others.

Anyway, thank you so much for posting this video for us to hear. I hope this survives for generations to come so they can listen to such an incredible time capsule.

So you are wishing an eternal prison sentence on them? Just what I'd want after I died, to find out that I had been sent back to the chain gang to serve an eternal sentence doing hard labor. These men sung to forget the fact that they were in prison, and to make the work go faster. Also, some would say that when you murder someone, you deserve a little work and pain. I don't know where people get the idea that these are a bunch of innocent men: just because they are black and laboring does not make it a terrible thing. This is not slavery, this is convicts, men who committed crimes, repaying their debt to society.

TheOnlyVitik Sounds spot on to me. The sad truth is that chain gangs probably kept going well into the seventies with not much difference from when they were first conceived. I don't think being a black man could have had too many days of leisure without knowing that he could end up on a chain gang, with a ridiculous sentence for doing nothing wrong other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think they used song as not only a way to keep time, but also to keep their minds off of giving up the fight for life, and hopes of seeing loved ones again. Somehow the blues were born into my soul, at ten years old I got my first taste from The Stones, and it's been there ever since. I find myself intrigued by this music none the less. I also enjoy Cajun music from as deep into the swamps as you could go, even though I've lived out West my whole life and can't understand a word of it, the music is beautiful but I know I'd hate the swamp. I can understand most of the songs from black prison chain gangs and love it for some reason too. Even though it is tied to hardship and pain. I know I'd of hated being in their place even for a day.

There’s a stretch of very old railroad tracks that are still functioning, but seldom used, near our new home and they were built/maintained by chain gangs. The old timers told my brother and me about how if you walk certain sections of the track on a warm summer’s evening you can faintly hear the voices of the chain gangs singing old songs like this. Dunno why, I think local legend says that a chain gang and the law men who watched them were killed in an accident, or possibly a wildfire that happened there.

imagine these people living the lives of slaves, and then becoming a prisoners... I can't imagine how it felt, the things they missed from a free life like a good meal, a woman or the simple freedom to walk wherever... This constituted their pain, and probably singing is the last thing a man can do to show that his spirit isn't broken when he has nothing. And today we have the luxury to be confused about where to shop or what to eat, and we still can't figure it out. Nothing has changed, only our will, we stopped singing.

Kelly, I followed your link to find the lyrics. Thank you and a Tip-A-the-Hat for this. There is so much wonderful, traditional music that should be brought to the attention of every child in school. If they would spend more time educating to grow and nurture young minds instead of teaching to pass tests we would be a more enlightened society.
