I wrote out all these lyrics then accidentally lost them all when I pressed the back space (and went back a page). Anyways, these are rough but mostly accurate, please enjoy.

Lyrics (all lines repeated):
Well it's Long John,
He's long gone,
He's long gone,
He's long gone,
Well if I hadn't listened,
What the road they say,
I could sit at home,
And a rode this day,
Well if I wasn't listen'
Got to runnin' around,
First thing I know,
I was jail house bound,
Well I got in jail,
With my mouth poked out,
Well now I'm in the pen,
and I can't get out,
It's Long John,
He's long gone,
It's Long John,
Oh, Long John,
Well it's on me,
Here's a pair of shoes,
Was a funny shoes,
That was ever seen,
Had a heel in front,
Had a heel behind,
Well it's gettin' nowhere,
That the boy was blind,
It's Long John,
He's long gone,
He's Long John,
Oh, Long John,
Well in 2 or 3 minutes,
Let me catch my way,
And in 2, 3 minutes,
I'm gone again,
Oh, Long John,
Oh, Long John,
Gonna call this summer,
Ain't gonna call no more,
If I call next summer,
He's on the move,
He's long gone,
He's long gone,
It's Long John,
He's long gone,
Well the god say,
In the chapter 14,
If the man live,
Let his sin be free,
Well Long John,
He's long gone,
Like a turkey through the corn,
Through the long corn,
Well it's Long John,
Had a mother like god,
Well it's Long John,
Well it's tender foot John,
With his long clothes on,
Just a skippin' through the corn,
Oh, long john,
Was long gone,
He's long gone,
He's long gone,
...
Well did you boys here
What the captain said
After you boys work
Gonna take your footy wear
Well if you don't work
gonna give you plenty hell
Oh, long gone
It's long john
Oh, long gone
it's long john
what you boys done
well you read on down
well you read on down
bout the chapter 16
well the road god said
well the road god said
After you boys old
After you boys old
I'm a drop in on down
With my wheat and zea
All are in my hand
Gonna kill every weed
That are in this land
I'm a long gone
I'm a long gone
I'm a long gone
Oh, Long John
Well the god say,
In the chapter 14,
If a man die,
He can live again...

Remember, I played by ear, so some lyrics may not be right.

@@christophermayfield6 it's still African/ a continuation of it. It didn't just cease to exist. This is why Black children in America must have a thorough understanding of their African cultures because comments like these indicate deeper issues alongside just a general non-understanding of what we brought with us.

You can hear jazz, blues, rock 'n roll already in here. It's amazing

@eliavincenzi8726

Just to clarify, "Long John" is the title of the song. Lightning is the nickname with which the lead singer was called. He sang with a group of Afro-American convicts at Darrington State Prison Farm, Sandy Point, Texas, 1934. It was recorded by John and Alan Lomax.

@sarahbear4848

@Martin Beberman that's an evil notion. they would've sang even more beautifully if they were free.

@sarahbear4848

@Martin Beberman oh I see. thanks for clarifying. and I'm sorry for assuming.

@Paelorian

@@sarahbear4848 How do you know the men who sang this didn't deserve their convictions? Each was convicted of specific crimes. We did have murderers, rapists, and thieves back then.

@sarahbear4848

Paelorian because often times (and this is historically documented), African Americans got arrested for simply saying the wrong thing or being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or being falsely accused and not having any right to defend themselves or go to trial. They simply were sent to prison. And essentially, it’s legal slavery, because these chain gangs would provide the cheapest labor the state could find

@sarahbear4848

Just another loophole in the system. And similar things continue to this day in the United States
