When Lil B titled his last digital label released mixtape I'm Gay, he received several death threats. Although he is heterosexual, he says the title is a message of support to the LGBT community. Referring to the alternative definition of gay, he says he is gay because he is happy. Following the death threats, he added "I'm Happy" in parenthesis to the album's title. I'm Gay received positive reviews with many fans commenting on the album's wide variety of positive messages and noting the unique beats and lyrical styles not common to mainstream hip hop. He raps about many controversial issues including race relations, poverty, humanity, and the justice system. The album also, according to many fans, shows the "true" side of Lil B. It entered the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #56 and the Heatseekers Albums chart at #20 for the week of July 16, 2011. It is for sale on iTunes but Lil B also uploaded it to the Internet for free, posting a link to it on Twitter and Facebook saying, "for all my fans who don't have $10 to buy my album, here it is for free."
Lil B typically releases at least one mixtape every month; so far in 2012 he has released 13 mixtapes - 4 in July alone. One of those released in July was the massive 848-song, nearly 5GB collection of Based Freestyles, which is his largest release to date. In 2013, hip-hop listeners voted Lil B as the greatest rapper of all time.

FN, namsayin'? Keep gutter, feel me? FN
Kill that zip whodie

Bet your bottom dollar that I come up

Down with that smother, you could run up

FN, namsayin'?
Keep gutter, yeah, feel me? FN
The lyrics to Lil B's "A Brick And FN" paint a vivid picture of someone trapped in the struggles of the hood, facing financial hardship and the constant threat of violence. The repetition of being "stuck in the hood with no money" emphasizes the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of poverty and desperation. The mention of someone potentially fronting them a "brick and FN" (likely referring to drugs and a firearm) reflects the grim reality that some individuals turn to illegal activities as a means of survival in harsh living conditions.
The use of street slang like "FN" adds authenticity to the narrative, highlighting the rough and gritty environment the singer finds themselves in. The aggressive and assertive tone in lines such as "Who you gonna front? that / Kill that zip whodie" showcases a sense of defiance and readiness to confront any challenges that come their way. The proclamation of being "down with that smother" and willing to "put hands on niggas" reveals a readiness to resort to violence to protect oneself and assert dominance in the hood.
There is a sense of pride and defiance in the lyrics, with references to putting "money on suckas" and showing no mercy to those who cross their path. The lines "I play dumb with ya / Some bricks and FNs, don't snitch" suggest a combination of street smarts and the willingness to engage in illegal activities without hesitation. The use of slang terms like "OG" and "young nigga" highlights a sense of belonging to a specific street culture and the importance of earning respect through actions rather than words.
Overall, the lyrics convey a raw and unapologetic representation of life in the hood, where survival often requires engaging in risky behaviors and navigating a dangerous environment. The theme of financial struggle, the constant threat of violence, and the need to assert dominance in a challenging setting are recurrent throughout the song, giving listeners a glimpse into the harsh realities faced by individuals in impoverished communities.
