Trouble
Lindsey Buckingham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two, ah-three, ah-four!
Two, ah-three, ah-four!
Two, ah-three, ah-four!

I really should be saying goodnight.
I really shouldn't stay anymore.
It's been so long since I held ya.
I've forgotten what love is for.

I should run on the double
I think I'm in trouble,
I think I'm in trouble.

So come to me darlin' and hold me
Let your honey keep you warm
Been so long since I held ya
I've forgotten what love is for.

I should run on the double
I think I'm in trouble.

Overall Meaning

The first thing that stands out about Lindsey Buckingham's "Trouble" is the infectious beat and repetition of "Two, ah-three, ah-four!" at the beginning of each verse. The song tells the story of a man who should be leaving and saying goodnight, but instead finds himself longing for his lover and wondering if he's in trouble for not being able to resist staying longer. He admits that it's been so long since he's held her that he's forgotten what love is for. The repetition of the line "I think I'm in trouble" emphasizes his internal struggle between wanting to leave and wanting to stay with his partner. The lyrics are simple but effective in conveying the feelings of temptation and desire.

One interesting fact about the song is that it was initially written for Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album "Rumours" but was ultimately cut from the album. Buckingham later reworked it for his 1981 debut solo album "Law and Order." Another interesting fact is that the album features contributions from Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks, Buckingham's bandmates in Fleetwood Mac. "Trouble" was released as a single and reached number 9 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. It has since become one of Buckingham's most popular solo songs.

The chords for "Trouble" are as follows:

Verse: G - C - G - D
Chorus: G - Em - Am - D

I used to think that this song, in it's original form, was just OK. Since I heard this version, I have been obsessed with it, it is stunning played like this.
