Ora
Lisa Hannigan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was adrift and
Caught in the ropes
Under a pinhole sky
Blowing off course

Bleach me to silver
Under the moon
Pulling the water round
And me to you

I'm going home
I'm going home
Won't you come with me?
Won't you come with me?

You'll be the boat and
I'll be the sea

Won't you come with me?
Won't you come with me?

Overall Meaning

In Lisa Hannigan's song "Ora," she uses vivid imagery to describe someone who feels lost and adrift in their life. The words "adrift" and "caught in the ropes" suggest that the person feels trapped and unable to move forward. They are "under a pinhole sky," which conjures an image of a small, confined space where there is no room to breathe. This feeling is reinforced by the line "blowing off course," which suggests that whatever direction the person was going in has been disrupted.

However, despite feeling lost and adrift, there is a glimmer of hope in these lyrics. The person sings of being "bleached to silver under the moon," a metaphor for change and transformation. They long to be pulled towards something or someone, and they ask the listener to come along with them. The idea of being a boat and the sea suggests a symbiotic relationship, where both parties depend on each other to find their way home.

Overall, "Ora" is a powerful expression of the human desire to find connection and meaning in life. The lyrics are full of rich symbolism that captures the complexity of human emotions and experiences.

Here are the lyrics:

ORA
I was adrift and...
caught in the ropes.
Under a pinhole sky...
blowing off course.
Bleach me to silver...
under the moon...
Pulling the water round...
and me to you.
I’m going home.
I’m going home.
Won’t you come with me?
Won’t you come with me?
You’ll be the boat and...
I’ll be the sea.
Won’t you come with me?
Won’t you come with me?

;)

From France, my traduction...

J'étais à la dérive et
pris(e) dans les cordes
d'un ciel en trou d'épingle
soufflant ma course

Blanchi(e) au vif argent
dessous la lune
ramenant l'eau à moi
et moi à toi

Allez, je rentre...
Allez, je rentre...
Tu rentres aussi, dis ?
Tu rentres aussi, dis ?

Tu seras le bateau
et moi, la mer...
Tu rentres aussi, dis ?
Tu rentres aussi, dis ?

This might be Lisa Hannigan's most beautiful song, a tall order, no doubt.

@greatsea

this song gives me the sensation of things disappearing that never fully were. It gives me memories of things that never quite happened.

There's really no good reason to focus on the negative like that. Instead, think of how since this is on the internet AND in the physical world, it'll most likely be around for ages hence, for people to see, hear, and enjoy for far past our lifetimes. Less people knowing about Lisa now is a downer at times, but the flipside of it is that she gets to our sacred secret from the rest of the world.
