Up The Line
Little Walter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You used to love me
You said I was your heart's desire
You're actin' strange lately tryin' to
Drive my love away

I'm cuttin' out, baby
Girl, I'm goin' back up the line
If I stay another day, you're goin' to
Drive me out of my mind

Took me from my home
I was nothin' but a child
Made all kinds a promises to me
I know it was lyin' and jive

I'm cuttin' out, baby
Girl, I'm goin' back up your line
If I stay another day, you're goin' to
Drive me out of my mind

Train is at the station
And I'm all packed to go
It ain't no use to worry
'Cause I won't be back no more

I'm cuttin' out, baby
Girl, I'm goin' back up the line
If I stay another day, you're goin' to
Drive me out of my mind

Overall Meaning

"Up The Line" is a blues song by Little Walter that speaks on the frustrations of love and being driven away. The lyrics begin with the artist recalling a time when the love he shared with his partner was strong and passionate. However, as the relationship progresses, the partner becomes distant and tries to push him away. His response is to leave to avoid being driven out of his mind.

Walter recalls how the partner promised him everything and took him from his home when he was still young and vulnerable. The promises were nothing but deceitful words that only contributed to his disappointment. You can easily sense his frustration, as he feels trapped in the relationship and has to leave to find peace of mind.

The train motif in "Up The Line" acts as a symbol of the artist's need to escape the situation. It's a common theme in the blues genre, and in this song, it represents the artist's ticket to freedom from a toxic relationship. Little Walter's harmonica playing and his singing style blend perfectly, making "Up The Line" an excellent example of Chicago Blues.
