Liv Kristine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I stop counting sheep - I can see their eyes
And the lights will shine (all night) tonight
And the lights will shine tonight
A fly's been watching me - some (a million) dogs arrive
Some will cover me - some choose to bite
Then I will come to life - I can guarantee that
I will come to life
Won't you come with me - I can ease your mind
Dreams, thoughts, fantasies keep rushing by
I can find no sleep - I never sleep at night
All those pretty sheep sit mesmerized
Then I will come to life - I can guarantee that
I will come to life
The lyrics of Liv Kristine's song "3 Am" appears to be telling a story of insomnia and the way it affects one's mind. The first two lines of the chorus, "I can find no sleep - I never sleep at night," expresses her inability to fall asleep. The next line, "I stop counting sheep - I can see their eyes," reveals that her mind is unable to shut down and relax during the night. The reference to the sheep's eyes dispels the notion that counting sheep will undoubtedly lead to sleep, as sometimes our thoughts and worries can cause a hard time sleeping.
The next verse in the chorus describes the distraction and noise that comes with the night. Liv Kristine describes the brightness and glare of the lights, which even at 3 am, continues to emit a ray of light, which could be symbolic of what can keep her awake. She describes the intrusion by dogs and insects, reminding us that like a fly easily waiting for its prey, small troubles and distractions can be troublesome, leaving one unable to sleep. However, Liv Kristine promises a change of situation, declaring, "Then I will come to life - I can guarantee that I will come to life." She acknowledges the fact that no matter how hopeless the situation may seem, there is always the possibility of better days to come.
The last line, "I can ease your mind," explains that if someone can come with her and brave these troubled waters, the promise of solace is assured. The final verse portrays the motion and fluidity of thoughts racing through one's mind, with "dreams, thoughts, and fantasies keep rushing by." The song's storyline is relatable, as many can easily relate to the struggle of trying to fall asleep and the accompanying thoughts and distractions that can hinder this goal.
