"It's an old song that I first heard in ‘95, when we were putting together the Mallrats soundtrack. It was actually in the film for the first test screening, but Live decided they wanted to hold onto it as a potential single off their next album (which would follow Throwing Copper). When I was editing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the song had still never surfaced or been released, so I put in a request for it again. Again, I was denied. Third time, apparently, was the charm. Needed a song for that sequence in Zack and Miri and remembered the Live track. This time, the band signed off on us using the track. Took 13 years, but was worth the wait."
Hold Me Up

Lying to you is a river of sin
Your metaphores, your silent calls
Your feelings are too real
Let them spew, a fall from grace
Would do us good today
I'll lift you up, we can love or cry
Oh, oh...
All that to you in a church by the sea
We're late, but not in the same way
We're older today
I'll lift you up, we can love or cry
Hey, I'm in love, I'll take you up again
Your eyes have too many colours and I can only try
Your energy could be runnin' low, now
The juice is dry
Oh, oh...
Images we cannot leave behind
Like two riversides we roll back
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
Lift me up
In the palm of your hand
Lying to you is a river of sin, oh...
Your metaphores, your silent calls
Your feelings are too real, oh...
Let them spew, a fall from grace
With your love you had today, oh, oh hey...
The lyrics of Live's song Hold Me Up seem to be about a powerful and intense love that is being expressed by the singer to his beloved. He wants to be held in the palm of her hand, figuratively speaking, as he confesses that lying to her is equivalent to committing a sin. He appreciates the metaphors and silent calls that she utilizes to express herself, but also encourages her to let her feelings flow uninhibitedly. In fact, he desires for both of them to experience a fall from grace, perhaps to strengthen their bond.
The chorus of the song suggests that the singer is declaring his love for his partner passionately and wholeheartedly. He is willing to take her up again and again, whether to love or cry. Despite coming late to their union, he feels like they are older today, implying that they have matured together. The verse about a church by the sea being a significant place for them is poignant, and they have some memories there that they can't forget. The last part of the song uses metaphors of energy running low and the juice being dry, reinforcing the idea of the importance of preserving love and affection.

This might be the most underrated rock song I’ve ever heard, if this had been released in 1994 it would’ve been the biggest hit on the record and a cult classic, if it weren’t for Zack & Miri nobody would’ve known about it. Crazy.
@maynard2012
Imagine if this was released to radio in the wake of Lightning Crashes and All Over You?
@Paradroidx
@@maynard2012 they already owned the alt rock era, this would have made them giants
@themanwhosoldtheworld5350
It's hard to fathom why they didn't include this on Throwing Copper unless there simply was not enough room, because damn, every song on that record is true.
