The lyrics to Lloyd Webber's song "Pie Jesu" are a Latin prayer that translates to "Merciful Jesus" in English. The repetition of "Pie Jesu" throughout the song emphasizes the plea for mercy.
In the first verse, the phrase "Pie Jesu, Qui tollis peccata mundi" translates to "Merciful Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world." It is a plea to Jesus to forgive the sins of humanity. The following line, "Dona eis requiem," can be translated as "Grant them rest." Here, the singer is asking for peace and rest for the souls seeking forgiveness.
The second verse repeats the same pleas for mercy and forgiveness. "Agnus Dei, Qui tollis peccata mundi" means "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." Again, it is a humbling acknowledgement of Jesus' role in providing redemption. The line "Dona eis requiem" is repeated, once again asking for rest and peace for those in need.
The third verse continues the plea for mercy, with the repeated phrase "Sempiternam," which means "everlasting" or "eternal." This emphasizes the singer's desire for eternal rest and salvation for themselves and others. The final line, "Requiem sempiternam," can be translated as "eternal rest." It is a final plea for everlasting peace and harmony.
Overall, the lyrics of "Pie Jesu" are a heartfelt and reverent prayer for mercy, forgiveness, and eternal peace. The repetition of the phrases underscores the deep longing for these spiritual qualities and serves as a poignant expression of faith and devotion.

I certainly am. I remember it well when it was first released. It's an absolutely exquisite performance and setting of this sacred text. It still brings tears to my eyes. I also remember first hearing it to the soundtrack from where the images of this video come: a film called Hope & Glory.
