The Forest
Logan/Robertson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've been the forest and I've been the fool
Lost in the darkness means nothing to you
I've got this heart and you've got this stream
Running from nothing but flowing from me

This love, you don't know
This love, you don't know
Well I've been in the shadows and you've been the light
We're both trying to find flowers through cracks in concrete
While there's petals on bed sheets in the back of your mind
Rough hands on flesh but there's no one in sight

This love, you don't know
This love, you don't know

You've been the forest and I've been the fool
Lost in the darkness right here beside you

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Forest" by Logan Robertson, the singer reflects on a complex and tumultuous relationship. The lyrics "You've been the forest and I've been the fool" suggest a sense of feeling lost or overwhelmed by the other person, represented as a vast and mysterious forest. It conveys a feeling of being out of one's element and perhaps being taken advantage of or deceived. The imagery of the forest symbolizes the unknown and the inability to fully grasp or understand the other person's intentions or emotions.

The line "Lost in the darkness means nothing to you" further emphasizes the singer's feelings of confusion and isolation within the relationship. Despite feeling lost and overwhelmed, the other person seems indifferent or unaffected by the darkness surrounding them. This could imply a lack of empathy or understanding on their part, adding to the singer's sense of being the "fool" in the dynamic.

The lyrics also delve into the complexities of love and connection. The lines "I've got this heart and you've got this stream / Running from nothing but flowing from me" hint at a mismatch in emotions and intentions between the singer and the other person. While the singer's emotions run deep and strong like a stream, the other person's feelings appear fleeting or aimless. This disconnect in emotional intensity adds another layer of complexity to their relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "The Forest" explore themes of confusion, unreciprocated love, and emotional turmoil within a relationship. The contrasting imagery of the forest and the fool, light and shadow, and flowers in concrete depict a struggle for understanding and connection amidst obstacles and misunderstandings. The repeated refrain of "This love, you don't know" underscores the singer's feelings of being misunderstood or unappreciated in their love for the other person. The song captures the raw emotions and vulnerabilities that can arise in relationships, highlighting the challenges of navigating love and connection in the midst of uncertainty and darkness.

Very good narrating voice and good research. {From UK}
We are well used to ancient overgrown graveyards here.... in a way the old ones like Highgate Cemetery are beautiful in their decay, but this one here is sad, as it feels so forgotten.
As for finding a 'lost'' grave, without accurate records, it is very hard.
I lost my mum as a toddler, and never knew where she was buried {she died in a London Fog like thousands of others already weakened by TB}..
In my Twenties, I plucked up courage to ask where she was buried, to be told ''Barnes Cemetery''..there is a very old abandoned one of that name, but it transpires she was buried in one near Richmond Park...I remember as a very young child my dad scrubbing a crucifix shaped grave, the green soapy algae making a froth..but this would have been an old grave..
Anyway, the cemetery is looked after still, so I gave her name, and sure enough, they led me to an old grave in the wilder part of the Cemetery, where the burials generally stopped in the 1940's......
But Mum was put in with her Father,..and her name was added later..hence the old grave I remembered from my toddlerhood.
I understand absolutely the need to 'find a grave' for the living, at least.
But without a marker, how can one find it?...old cemeteries become awry, due to the coffins breaking down, and the ground settling, and Nature soon takes over. Arnos Vale in Bristol actually had bones visible in some 1850's crypts...but is a haven for wildlife and architecturally beautiful.

Plague pits are still found in London, and the unknown people's bones are studied...as are old Augustine Monasteries [where the bones of the dead monks show a far from ascetic life!

I’m from this area.. and while I can’t say if it’s paranormal, I can say I’ve experienced the ‘gravity trap.’ My father took me to test it out when I was 14 or 15 - I was terrified because I grew up hearing these stories. Looking back, I’m not sure I believe it is what we say it is - but it’s definitely an interesting story.

The pictures of abandoned cemeteries are something that (literally) hits home. We visit similar locations a town over from Logan yearly to put flowers on our families graves, and it’s so sad that so many people are ‘forgotten’. 💔

I don’t think Mamie’s killer was ever brought to justice; someone served time for something he didn’t do. It wasn’t the first time Logan County has had shady misdoings, and unfortunately it wasn’t the last.

If I had family in a graveyard that looked like that I'd devote one weekend a year to cleaning it up. My family have our own graveyard at the back of what was once my Grandaddy's farm in northwest, Tennessee and it dates back to 1860. We pay someone to mow it as none of my family live near it anymore but once a year my family has "graveyard day" where we all show up there and work to clean the place up, re-set any stones that need it, etc. and then we all have a big dinner on it's grounds. There are old picnic tables that have been sitting there off to the side since before I was born and I'm 53 now. They must have been built from chestnut as that wood lasts forever. It's what all the old gray weathered barns in that area were built with.

I too felt very Sorrowful and wish I could help. I’ve never been to Virginia or West Virginia. I find it very sad at what happened . Even though Mamie Thurman’s grave has never been found, you would think this day and age someone would have found something. This story broke my heart. I believe they put blame the wrong person. Miss you Rest In Peace Mamie Thurman.

@Donna King If the wife did it, it was seething anger and jealousy. If Robertson did it, perhaps he was afraid Mamie might be pregnant. Just a guess or two.

I’m from Logan County myself, and I absolutely loved this video. I have looked myself for her grave marker, but was told when I was younger that her body had been dug up and moved. This is a great mysterious story! Great video👍👻

@JoLoRod1 I will be going in August to cleam the graves. I take photos for my mom every time I go.

JoLoRod1

@Carolyn Walls Thanks for the information.

I believe that the simpler answers are probably the more likely. Things like a rusted out steel marker or someone stealing the marker is more likely than someone digging up the grave and moving the body to a new site.

You should create a video for your grandmother so that she could visit her parents virtually, if you could find their graves.
