Lokua Kanza was born Pascal Lokua Kanza in 1958 in Bukavu, in the province of Kivu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the eldest of eight children, with a Mongo father and a Tutsi mother from Rwanda. In 1964, the family went to live in Kinshasa (Congo's capital) in a middle class area, until the day when Pascal's father, a ship's captain, died. His mother then moved to a much poorer area of the city, and Lokua, the eldest, had to work to feed the family. He therefore went to school part time, and took odd jobs, as well as singing in churches. Lokua Kanza sings in French, Lingala, and English.

The lyrics of Lokua Kanza's "Salle" seem to tell the story of a man expressing his love to a woman named Salle. The opening lines speak of the singer's journey to find her, describing the obstacles he faces along the way, such as rivers and forests. He then goes on to declare his love for Salle, saying that he thinks of her constantly.
The verses that follow reflect on the nuances of their relationship. The singer wonders what it is that he did to win her over and expresses frustration at his inability to understand her sometimes. He also shares some tender moments with her, such as when he brings her water to drink.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of deep love and devotion, which is emphasized in the repetition of the lyrics "Mpe yoo salleeeeeee / Te quiero salleeeeee" (I love you Salle).
Overall, "Salle" seems to tell a story of a struggling but ultimately triumphant romance, with the singers fighting through adversity to be together.
