The Parra brothers (Gabriel, drums Claudio, piano, and Eduardo, electric piano) met Mario Mutis (bass) and Eduardo "Gato" Alquinta (guitars and lead vocals) in their childhood and started to play music for fun. They became prominent in Viña del Mar, playing at many gigs with a bossa-nova/bolero style. The former name of the band was High & Bass. However, most of their fans believed they were called "Jaibas" (crabs). After a while they decide to correct their name and definitely change it to Los Jaivas.
After a first phase characterized by a of more tropical sound they began to blend styles, experimenting with hippie sound, progressive rock and avant-garde jazz. Their most recognized feature it's their blending of styles with the traditional sounds -and instruments- of the region.

Mambo de Machaguay
The lyrics of Los Jaivas's song "Mambo de Machaguay" describe a journey from Lima to Machaguay to dance the mambo. The repetition of the two opening lines indicates the excitement and anticipation of the journey. The next two lines describe the intention of the journey, which is to dance the mambo in Machaguay. The lines "Por el cerro negro me la voy a llevar, a la maraqueña me la voy a robar" suggest that the singer is planning on stealing a dance partner, likely a woman, and taking her into the mountains to dance the mambo. The repeated refrain "mambo que rico el mambo, mambo de Machaguay" expresses the joy and pleasure of the dance and of being in Machaguay. The ending lines of the song suggest that the singer is leaving, having said goodbye to the person they came to see.
