We can wait to long
All for us united now
Returning home
But the first black king
The first black king
Has been crowned in Etiopía
Halei selassi
They took us from Africa
With no questions
No matter were you come from
If you're black, you're alone
But the first black king
The first black king
Has been crowned in Etiopía
Halei selassi
Halei selassi
Going back to Africa
We can wait to long
All of us united now
Returning now oh yeah
But the first black king
The first black king
Has been crowned in Etiopía

The lyrics of Los Pericos's song "Halei Selassi" speak to the importance of African heritage and unity, specifically in relation to the crowning of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. The song emphasizes the need to return to Africa and reconnect with the roots that were forcibly taken away from African descendants through the history of slavery.
The opening lines, "Going back to Africa, we can't wait too long," express a sense of urgency in reclaiming one's African identity. The lyrics convey a longing for unity among all African descendants, stating, "All for us united now, returning home." This unity is further emphasized in the repetition of the lines, "But the first black king, has been crowned in Etiopia." Emperor Haile Selassie, who is often regarded as a symbol of African pride and a champion of African liberation, is celebrated as the first black king.
The chorus consists of the phrase "Halei Selassi" repeated several times. This is a reference to the traditional Ethiopian Orthodox Christian greeting, "Hailé Selassie I," which means "Power of the Trinity." The use of this greeting in the song serves as a form of reverence and respect for the Ethiopian emperor.
Overall, "Halei Selassi" is a powerful anthem that urges African descendants to recognize and honor their African roots, highlighting the significance of Emperor Haile Selassie as a symbol of pride and unity.
