Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.

If I want to be the hero I was meant to be
And if I'm treading in deep water
Getting blinded by the sun
Could be I'm dancing to the rhythm of a different drum
I could stand out in the open 'neath the thunder and rain
Buy a one-way ticket on a runaway train
Try hanging by my fingers off a mountainside
It's gonna be a wild ride tonight
Well darling, it's fine if you pray for me
But I'll be seeing all the places that I wanted to see
I might be playing all the numbers and rolling out the dice
Just might do a little two-step 'cross some pretty thin ice
'Cos I got my own demons and some fears to face
And it's time I got acquainted with my measure of faith
Admit to a few things that I always denied
Taste some dangerous dishes that I never tried
Darling, it's a wonder you can still love me
Even when I'm adding to your misery
But it's time for a good game like that Russian Roulette
A high-wire act without a safety net
I might pick me a fight down there in Mexico
Put my foot in my mouth while digging my own hole
Order humble pie and then swallow my pride
Don't need to be afraid if the Lord's my guide
The song "Wild Ride" by Lost Dogs is a contemplative and introspective look at the human struggle to break free from the constraints of everyday life and journey into the unknown. The song’s protagonist is seeking to be the hero he was meant to be, and this journey can be a wild ride. He doesn't want his loved ones to worry and assures them that he will be okay. He then describes the many risks he is willing to take, including dancing to the rhythm of a different drum and standing out in the open beneath the thunder and rain. The singer is ready to take a one-way ticket on a runaway train, hang by his fingers off a mountainside, and take a wicked little tumble down a slip and slide.
The singer is aware that his journey will be fraught with dangers and obstacles, but he is willing to face them. He admits to having demons and fears that need to be confronted. He needs to take risks, taste dangerous dishes he has never tried, and admit to a few things that he always denied. He realizes that he needs to explore new territories, and it's the right time to acquaint himself with his measure of faith. He also acknowledges that his loved ones will be affected, and apologizes for adding to their misery. However, he knows that he needs to move on, and it's time for a good game, like Russian roulette.
Overall, "Wild Ride" is a song about taking risks, pushing boundaries, and embracing the journey, no matter what it entails. It's about acknowledging our fears and recognizing that we need to confront them head-on. It's a reminder that life is short, and we need to make the most of it every day.
