He soon gained fame due to the power and strength of his voice. The young tenor earned valuable experience and significant recognition while touring on the invitation of soprano Joan Sutherland, making his 1965 U.S. debut in Miami, Florida on her recommendation. His position was solidified in the years between 1966 and 1972, during which Pavarotti first appeared at Milan's seminal La Scala, at other major European houses, and, in 1968, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera. He received great acclaim, particularly working well with Joan Sutherland.
By the mid-70s, the tenor became known worldwide, famed for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. His "high C" became one of his trademarks. The late 70s and 80s saw Pavarotti making significant appearances in the world's opera houses and establishing himself as one of the great singers of the era.
Popular stardom came at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the performances of "Nessun Dorma" (from Turandot) and as one of The Three Tenors in their famed first concert held on the eve of the final match of the tournament (repeated at later Cups). Pavarotti sang together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and brought to the much wider audience hits previously confined to the opera world. Appearances in advertisements and with pop icons in concerts around the world furthered his influence. Pavarotti always maintained his identity as an opera star, unlike many crossover artists.
The later years brought a decline in ability to perform on stage due to a weight gain and lack of mobility. Pavarotti's final appearance in an opera was at the Met in March 2004. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy saw him performing for the last time. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, with the crowd as its Chorus, and got a thunderous standing ovation. On September 6, 2007, he died at home in Modena from pancreatic cancer.

E notte mmiezo 'o mare
Mille feneste
Scurano luntano
Tu si una sole ancora
Ammore mio 'nce sta
Un uocchio m'accumpagna
Me lassa tutt' 'e ssere cu nu vasa
E me saluta ca lle tremma 'a voce
Notte che pace daie
Notta che faie sunna
Fa' che s'addorme
E luna ssape quanto voglio bbene
Ch'io moro pe' aspettà
Ch'o juorno vene
Io smania e cerco 'o sole
'O primmo sole pe' turnà
Notte pe'mmare
Notte 'e piscatore
Pecchè m'astrigne
E nun me lasse ancora
Notte che pace daie
Notte famm'abbraccià
A chi m'aspettà
E luna ssape quanto voglio bbene
Ch'io moro pe' aspetta
Ch'o juorno vene
Io smanio e cerco 'o sole
'O primmo sole pe' turnà
E luna ssape quanto voglio bbene
Ch'io moro pe' aspetta ch'o juorno vene
Io smanio e cerco 'o sole
'O primmo sole pe' turnà
The song Voce 'e Notte by Luciano Pavarotti is a beautiful tale of a lover's longing for reunification. The night is the symbol of unity and solace for the singer. Nighttime is a lonely time, where even the thousand windows of distant dwellings are shuttered, but the singer is sustained by his love for his beloved, who is like a lone star, shining brilliantly in the midst of darkness. He yearns to be united with her, to leave behind all of his worldly affairs and to be with her, but he is unable to do so. He is comforted by the night's tranquility, and wants to rest in its peacefulness, falling asleep in the loving embrace of his beloved. He knows that the moon is aware of how much he loves his beloved, and he is ready to wait as long as he has to, for the day when he can be with her, to greet the first sunrise that brings the hope of rekindling their love.
The song is a love ballad, the image of the night, filled with longing and hope, is used to evoke the sadness that comes from being separated from a loved one. The singer is filled with desperation and desires the peacefulness of the night to help him shut out the world, and find love in the darkness. The music of the song is slow, mournful and reflective, with a classic Italian melody that is recognizable and affecting. Pavarotti's voice is filled with the emotion of someone who is heartbroken, and yet never gives up hope. All these elements blend together to create a rich and gorgeous paean to the deep love that exists between the two lovers.

Quiet night
E notte mmiezo 'o mare
Night in the middle of the sea
Mille feneste
A thousand windows
Scurano luntano
Darkness in the distance
Tu si una sole ancora
You are still a sun
Ammore mio 'nce sta
My love is still here
Un uocchio m'accumpagna
An eye accompanies me
Me lassa tutt' 'e ssere cu nu vasa
It leaves me all being with a kiss
E me saluta ca lle tremma 'a voce
And greets me with a trembling voice
Notte che pace daie
Night that gives peace
Notta che faie sunna
Night that induces sleep
Fa' che s'addorme
Make me fall asleep
E luna ssape quanto voglio bbene
And the moon knows how much I love
Ch'io moro pe' aspettà
That I die waiting
Ch'o juorno vene
That the day comes
Io smania e cerco 'o sole
I yearn and seek the sun
'O primmo sole pe' turnà
The first sun to return
Notte pe'mmare

Pecchè m'astrigne
Because it constrains me
E nun me lasse ancora

Si 'sta voce te scéta 'int' 'a nuttata,
Mentre t'astrigne 'o sposo tujo vicino...
Statte scetata, si vuó' stá scetata,
Ma fa' vedé ca duorme a suonno chino...
Nun ghí vicino ê llastre pe' fá 'a spia,
Pecché nun puó' sbagliá 'sta voce è 'a mia...
E' 'a stessa voce 'e quanno tutt'e duje,
Scurnuse, nce parlávamo cu 'o "vvuje".
Si 'sta voce te canta dint"o core
Chello ca nun te cerco e nun te dico;
Tutt"o turmiento 'e nu luntano ammore,
Tutto ll'ammore 'e nu turmiento antico...
Si te vène na smania 'e vulé bene,
Na smania 'e vase córrere p' 'e vvéne,
Nu fuoco che t'abbrucia comm'a che,
Vásate a chillo... che te 'mporta 'e me?
Si 'sta voce, che chiagne 'int' 'a nuttata,
Te sceta 'o sposo, nun avé paura...
Vide ch'è senza nomme 'a serenata,
Dille ca dorme e che se rassicura...
Dille accussí: "Chi canta 'int'a 'sta via
O sarrá pazzo o more 'e gelusia!
Starrá chiagnenno quacche 'nfamitá...
Canta isso sulo... Ma che canta a fá?!..."
Starrá chiagnenno quacche 'nfamitá...
Canta isso sulo... Ma che canta a fá?!..."
...Voce e notte te sceta dint' a nuttata... è a voce mia... oe.
