Please Come Home for Christmas
Luther Vandross Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I hope that love will bring you here, home for a while
I'll make the best of what's for me
But I would love you here to be holding me now
How I wish that you and I and love could be close
'Cause the holidays are when I need you most, so
Another year, another chance
For us to try
Please come home for Christmas (I don't want it this way)
Please come home for Christmas (and stay)
Good morning love, it's me again
As Christmas day begins again, I think of you
I know that time has passed us by
I tell myself to stop but I still dream it's true
How I dream that you and I and love could be one
'Cause Christmas time should never be lonesome
Remember when our love began
You held my heart, I held you hand
Ready to fly
Please come home for Christmas (I don't want it this way)
Please come home for Christmas (and stay)
The lyrics to Luther Vandross's song Please Come Home for Christmas are a plea for a loved one to return home for the holidays. The first verse speaks of the anticipation for Christmas day, and the hope that the power of love will bring the missing person back. The singer acknowledges that they will make the best of the situation, but ultimately desires to be held by the one they love. The pre-chorus reveals the true pain and longing of the singer during the holiday season. They wish that they could be close with their loved one and share in the joy of the holidays together.
The second verse starts with a hopeful greeting on Christmas day, but the singer quickly reminisces on the past and regrets the time that has passed them by. They dream of rekindling the love they once shared and wish that they could be reunited. The singer reflects on their past experiences with their love, remembering how they both were ready to fly together. The chorus continues to plead for their loved one to come home for Christmas, not wanting to spend the holidays alone.
The song's poignant lyrics and Luther Vandross's soulful voice have made this rendition one of the most beloved versions of the festive classic. The song has also garnered widespread popularity, thanks in part to several notable covers by artists such as Charles Brown, Bon Jovi, and Eagles.
