Say she's a big balloon
I said, 'Hey girl, you are beautiful'
Red shoes, red glasses please
Red glasses got me on my knees
Singing 'Hey Betty, you are beautiful'
You take on fashion girls
'Cause a brighter woman
Needs a bolder man is why
They throw a stare
When Betty walks through the door
But if you show her love
She'll show you so much more
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Walks in to the room
Feels like a big balloon
I said, 'Hey girls you are beautiful'
Diet coke and a pizza please
Diet coke I'm on my knees
Screaming 'Big girl you are beautiful'
You take your girl
And multiply her by four
Now a whole lotta woman
Needs a whole lot more
Get yourself to the Butterfly Lounge
Find yourself a big lady
Big boy coming around
And there we gonna do baby
No need to fantasise
Since I was in my prizes
A watering hole
With the girls around
And curves in all the right places
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Get yourself to the Butterfly Lounge
Find yourself a big lady
Big boy coming around
And there we gonna do baby
No need to fantasise
Since I was in my prizes
A watering hole
With the girls around
And curves in all the right places
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
Hey Betty you are beautiful
In Mika's song "Hey Betty," the singer notices a woman entering the room who he describes as "a big balloon." He greets her by saying, "Hey girl, you are beautiful." The woman is wearing red shoes and red glasses, which seemingly capture the singer's attention. He sings, "Red glasses got me on my knees, singing 'Hey Betty, you are beautiful.'" The song then transitions to the singer's commentary on societal beauty standards, as he notes that he feels like he's going to die when faced with the pressure to be with a more traditionally attractive partner. He acknowledges that a "brighter" or higher-status woman may need a "bolder" or more confident man, but insists that everyone has their own unique beauty. The song's chorus repeatedly affirms the titular woman's beauty.
The phrase "big girl you are beautiful" is repeated in the latter half of the song, changing the subject from Betty to a more general commentary on plus-sized beauty. Mika suggests that a "whole lotta woman" needs even more love and admiration than a smaller woman, as he encourages his listeners to "get yourself to the Butterfly Lounge" - a metaphorical location for a place where people can appreciate the beauty of plus-sized women.
The music video for "Hey Betty" features plus-sized women dancing in front of a group of men who are initially laughing and mocking them. As the women continue their dance, they gradually win the approval and admiration of the men. The video serves as an artistic representation of the song's message, which is that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and deserves to be celebrated.
Overall, "Hey Betty" is a catchy pop song with a powerful message of body positivity and self-love. By affirming the beauty of plus-sized women and rejecting the societal pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards, Mika encourages his listeners to embrace their unique beauty.
