I Went to Hell Last Night
MIKA Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Followed you there, I was standing by your side
The saddest thing I′ve ever seen
Made me angrier than I've ever been
But in the darkest place, a saving grace
After all we′ve been through
Though it kills me to say this
There's a little bit of God in everything
From the sun in the sky to the tears that you cry
There′s a little bit of God in everything
From the dirt that we hold to our diamonds and gold
I finally realized
Just how lonely you have really been
Why couldn′t I see it before?
Is that why you let the devil in?
In the darkest place, I will follow you
There's a little bit of God in everything
From the sun in the sky to the tears that we cry
There′s a little bit of God in everything
From the dirt that we hold to our diamonds and gold
When you're dark and you′re sad, and your future's just as bad
There′s a little bit of God in everything
When you're hurt and you're sour, even in your darkest hour
There′s a little bit of God in everything
From the king to the fool to the bastards back at school
There′s a little bit of God in everything
(Getting all your diamonds and gold)
And though you may not be in the finest company
There's a little bit of God in everything
(Getting all your diamonds and gold)
When you′re hurt and you're sour, even in your darkest hour
There′s a little bit of God in everything, oh
(Getting all your diamonds and gold)
From a priest to the heart to the man who start the war
There's a little bit of God in everything
(Getting all your diamonds and gold)
And one day you will see part of you is part of me
There′s a little bit of God in everything
In "I Went to Hell Last Night", Mika describes a harrowing experience in which he follows someone he cares about to Hell, and is disturbed by what he sees there. However, despite the darkness and despair that surrounds him, he finds comfort in the idea that there is a little bit of God in everything - from the sun in the sky to the dirt on the ground. The song explores themes of love, pain, and spirituality, with Mika ultimately concluding that humanity contains both darkness and light, but that there is always hope for redemption.
The lyrics of "I Went to Hell Last Night" are open to interpretation, but one possible reading is that the song is about the struggle to find hope and faith in difficult times. The singer is faced with the utter despair of Hell, but rather than giving in to hopelessness, he finds a glimmer of light in the knowledge that everything contains a bit of God. This idea is echoed in the chorus, which repeats the phrase "there's a little bit of God in everything" as a reminder that even the darkest moments can contain something positive.
Overall, "I Went to Hell Last Night" is a powerful and emotionally resonant song that explores some of life's most difficult questions. It is a testament to Mika's skill as a songwriter that he is able to tackle such complex themes in a way that is both musically compelling and intellectually engaging.
