Founding members Chuck Robertson, Sascha Lazor, Todd Rosenberg, Carter Benson and James Malis started the group in high school but the band's membership has changed frequently since its inception. Drummer Todd Rosenberg left the band in 1999, Benson left the band in 2002, and bassist Mark Iversen left the band in 2006. The current lineup consists of:
* Chuck Robertson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/primary lyricist)
* Sascha Lazor (lead guitar/banjo/primary composer),
* Keith Douglas (trumpet/backing vocals)
* Ed Hernandez (trombone)
* Brian Flenniken (drums/percussion),
* Cris Badham (bass guitar).
The band used to play under the name The Ivy League, but in 1996 they changed their name after signing to the Honest Don's Records label to avoid confusion (and potential litigation) with two prior bands that went by the same moniker. The band's debut album, Quality Soft Core, was released the following year. After the release of the album, the band was signed to Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords, through which the Mad Caddies have since released 4 studio albums, an EP and a live album.

Shot in the Dark
Mad Caddies Lyrics

both trying to get with Alabama the Bitch
She'd date any scoundrel as long as they're rich you know
She's juicing the Philly's riggin' the rig
she's tagging the wages laying the vig
it's not a profession but it ain't a bad gig oh no
was it supposed to happen or just a mistake
and who's gonna know when everyone's on the take yeah
A day at the races a shot at the dark
Santa Anita or Hollywood park
the odds are against you and that's how they stay
but that's what you get if you play
Manny the Mug and Shelly the Shill
are trying to drink something other than swill
So put up that guy on Jupiter Jill in the fifth
Last shot came in and I needed one
and that's when he lodged with Alabama
but she never laid it down 'cuz that whore said never would
Manny and Shell got nothing from Pam
put her to hit so she went on a lam
there's no more for Bobby and no more for Sam oh no
A day at the races a shot at the dark
Santa Anita or Hollywood park
the odds are against you and that's how they stay
but that's what you get if you play
and that's what you get when you play
The Mad Caddies's Shot in the Dark is a song that tells the story of a group of people involved in shady business deals in which everyone is trying to outdo each other to get ahead. The lyrics are a commentary on the underground world of gambling and organized crime. Bobby the Book and Sammy the Snitch are two scoundrels trying to make a connection with Alabama the Bitch, who is willing to date anyone as long as they are rich. Meanwhile, Penny I can't has had a run of bad luck, leaving her to question if it was supposed to happen or just a mistake. The lines "and who's gonna know when everyone's on the take yeah" suggests that the entire industry is corrupt and no one is playing by the rules.
The second verse introduces Manny the Mug and Shelly the Shill, who are trying to upgrade their miserable lives by making some easy money. They put their money on Jupiter Jill, hoping to make a killing. The last shot came in, and they needed it to win, but it ended up with Alabama, who refused to lay it down, denying Manny and Shelly their chance at success. Pam, who they had counted on, ended up going on the lam, leaving Bobby and Sam with nothing.
Shot in the Dark is a satirical take on the gambling industry, where everyone is trying to get rich quickly by breaking the rules. The chorus repeats the lines "a day at the races, a shot at the dark, Santa Anita or Hollywood park," emphasizing the idea of taking risks and the uncertain outcomes of gambling. The song highlights the desperation of people looking for a way out of their bleak circumstances, only to find themselves deeper in trouble.
