Black and Blue
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey you, I'm round your house again
I feel so out of place
Going to the corner shop
The men from out of space
Seems so very long ago
When we stayed out through the night
Like those days that would never end
And all those things will, never mend

Feeling kind of black and blue
But the fresh winds on the street
Free falling through the years
But I'm still on my feet

Early before breakfast time
Sometime after dawn
Gently close the front door
Leave you on your own
But now its over and I can't help feeling glad
Oh so many tears were spent
Oh so many years just went

And I'm feeling kind of black and blue
But the wind is on my back
No time for fair do wells
Don't forget to feed the cat

No time for fairy tales
No time for living hells
No time for wedding bells

'Cause I'm feeling kind of black and blue
But the fresh winds on the street
Free falling through the years
But I'm still on my feet

Feeling kind of black and blue
But the fresh winds on the street
Free falling through the years
But I'm still on my feet

Feeling kind of black and blue
But the fresh wind is on my back

No time for fair do wells
Don't forget to feed the cat.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Black and Blue" by Madness involves a person who goes to someone's house but feels out of place, as if it has been ages ago since they last roamed around with that person. They reminisce about the time when they used to stay out all night, when their days were endless like the fun they used to have. However, despite all of that, they feel black and blue but the fresh winds ease it. They left that afternoon and left the person alone but that was ancient history now. They feel pleased it is over, but memories still haunt them. There is no time for fairy tales, for living hells, and wedding bells, but they are still on their feet, and the wind is on their back. Late days, early mornings, it's all been overcome, and even though feeling uneasy, they're still standing.

The lyrics of the song appear to describe the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia - a longing for the past with a realization that those happy days are gone. The singer remembers how it felt to have no worries and how they once felt like nothing could bring them down. However, they also acknowledge that those days are long gone and have left them feeling a little black and blue. Nevertheless, the breeze on the street reminds them that they're still going, still standing. They appear to be looking forward as they remind themselves that they have to feed the cat and that there's no time for a fairytale, hell or wedding bells.
