Blue Beast
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can fly you to your loved ones but I can promise no return
To a shell-shocked God forsaken where their craters still they burn
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me

Still the worst is over that I hope you understand
The you're one more hurdle over our protector of the land
Have a drink on me
I put it down to the company

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip
Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip

Here you have this medal you can even melt it down
Or frame it in the living room every time you turn around
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me

I heard you shout for yesterday, but I was sleeping on the job
And I dreamt of fighters miles away whose lives I had to rob
Have a drink on me
I put it down to the company

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip
Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip

Here you have this medal you can even melt it down
Or frame it in the living room every time you turn around

I can fly your loved ones to you
With guarantee of no return
And if John Wayne's dummy's bounce off
Don't look shocked when it comes your turn
Have a drink on me
I put it down to company

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip
Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip

Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip hip hip
Hip hip

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip
Hip hip hip hip
Hip hip

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip

Three cheers to the blue skinned beast hip hip hip hip
To the blue skinned beast hip hip

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Skinned Beast" by Madness is a commentary on the experience of war, particularly highlighting the ways in which soldiers are encouraged to forget the horrors they have witnessed and to celebrate their role as protectors of their country. The first verse describes the singer's ability to bring loved ones home, but the implication is that this act may ultimately be futile, as the damage of war can never truly be undone. The second verse acknowledges that the worst of the conflict may be over, but also points out that the soldiers who have survived still face psychological hurdles and must continue to justify their actions.

The chorus, "Three cheers to the blue skinned beast," is a sarcastic riff on the traditional toast to the queen or other authority figures. The "blue skinned beast" is likely a reference to the military itself, or perhaps to the idea of war in general. The final verse circles back to the singer's ability to fly loved ones back home, but adds a grim twist: if one's own loved ones do return safely, it may only be a matter of time before the same ultimate fate befalls the listener.

Overall, "Blue Skinned Beast" takes a critical look at the mechanisms of war and the ways in which societies glorify and justify violence. The song encourages listeners to question the narratives they are fed about the necessity of war and to remember the human toll of its destructive power.

This song is playing at the The Red Lion in Danville as we go native. We're wearing Beckham jerseys... people ask if we're all related and call us Beckham. The bar has almost no lighting -- brown leather with brass thumbtacks, lots of clutter, books without dust jackets no blurbs... the AC is turned down to 52 degrees so we can complain about it... Bobo throws a first edition John Locke's Two Treatises in the firepit with a stiff upper lip. After a few pints of warm brown beer we say "Cheers" to celebrate the defeat of the metric system then enjoy chips and colon tartar on old plates with light blue patterns. T-Bone's been building a room addition so he wonders aloud if his great great grandparents would approve of the roof design. We're torn in debate over the difference between colonial and neocolonial -- until P Swank mentions the Suez Canal Crisis and we hit him over the head with bottles and he throws darts at us. It's first rate hooliganism.

On the way out to the parking lot with new five foot trees, some bald blokes are playing soccer and singing We Are The Champions with such hubris that Bobo soaks his shirt in Joan Collins Cologne For Men, runs onto the grass, intercepts a pass, does a 180 slam over the goal bar and says, "You just got dunked on courtesy of Sex Panther by Joan Collins." We set picks and throw down three more goals then relax on defense and smoke cigarettes to play out the game. The blokes' faces are quite red with repressed anger so we go inside and buy them brown beer, sing...

Cheers

One of my favourite Madness tunes. Definitely would have been a hit if released as a single.
