Tears You Can
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now I see tears you can't hide
Carry the world on your back
Heavy weights tear you apart
Now I see tears you can't hide
Feel in a rage can't speak up for yourself
All that you try to do it's no good anyway
Now I see tears you can't hide
No use saying it's a crime
Voices surround me but they lie, lie
Hold out your hand together make your stand
You may be alone you may feel scared inside
Now I see tears you can't hide
No use saying it's a crime
Voices surround me but they lie, lie
(Just hit me with your saxophone, Lee)
Now I see tears you can't hide
Now I see tears you can't hide

Now I see tears you can't
Tears you can't tears you can't hide

Overall Meaning

The song "Tears You Can't Hide" by Madness is a power ballad about recognizing and acknowledging the struggles of someone close to you who is trying to carry a heavy emotional burden alone. The lyrics convey a sense of empathy and understanding towards this person's situation. The repetition of the line "Now I see tears you can't hide" emphasizes the new level of awareness the singer has reached about their friend's difficulties. The imagery of carrying the world on one's back and heavy weights tearing one apart effectively convey the emotional toll of such struggles.

Additionally, the verse about feeling in a rage but being unable to speak up for oneself highlights the sense of helplessness often accompany emotional turmoil. The chorus encourages the person to hold out their hand and make their stand, indicating that they do not have to go through this alone. The use of a saxophone solo towards the end of the song adds an emotional depth that emphasizes the sadness and vulnerability of the situation.

Probably my favourite Madness song. Gorgeous tune and vocal - it certainly made me rush out and buy Cathal Smyth's "A Comfortable Man" album when it was released in 2015. His voice is a touch more gravelly on his own album, but some of the songs tear at your heart. Highly recommended.

mjwchapman

high praise. in retrospect this is the best song on the album.

This and One Better Day are their best ‘serious’ songs. And the older I get, the more I like them
