The Ghost Train
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A straw headed woman
and a barrel chested man.
A pocket full of posies
and a hat brim full of sand.
Ooh oo-oo-oh,
waiting for the train that never comes.

A dog chasing the tumbleweeds
across the sandy floor.
Adrift along the platform
through the ticket office door.

Ooh oo-oo-oh,
waiting for the train that never comes.
Ooh oo-oo-oh,
waiting for the train that never comes.

But don't tell me there's nothing coming,
you don't fool me.
I hear the ghost train rumbling
along the track to set them free.
And I hear them

It's black and white don't try to hide it.
It's black and white don't try to hide it.

The Stationmaster's writing
with a piece of orange chalk.
A hundred cancellations
still noone wants to walk.
Keep the hungry children
From the skeletons in the van.
Aim to keep an eye out
for the gypsy caravan

Ooh oo-oo-oh,
waiting for the train that never comes.
Ooh oo-oo-oh,
waiting for the train that never comes.

I hear the ghost train rumbling
along the track to set them free.
And I hear them

It's black and white don't try to hide it.
(Repeat)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Madness's song The Ghost Train depict a scene at a deserted train station. The song opens with a description of a couple waiting for a train that never comes. The first two lines of the song paint pictures of a couple; a straw-headed woman and a barrel-chested man, but they are left waiting for the train that never comes. The next lines describe a dog chasing tumbleweeds across the sandy floor while the couple remains stranded. The sense of abandonment is amplified as the next line reads "Adrift along the platform through the ticket office door." Distressingly, the couple is still waiting for their train that will never come.

However, the lyrics take a cryptic turn with the line "But don't tell me there's nothing coming, you don't fool me." It seems that the singer knows something about the train that the couple is waiting for, and the chorus brings more clarity as they recognize the sound of the ghost train rumbling along the track to set them free. The imagery moves from black and white to color as the ghost train brings a semblance of hope to these lonely travelers.

The following lines describe the struggles of the Stationmaster, whose job is to provide a sense of normalcy to the abandoned train station with a hundred cancellations and no one wants to walk. The verse ends with the ominous aim to keep an eye out for the gypsy caravan. The song ends with the chorus's haunting refrain of the tone-shifting phrase "It's black and white, don't try to hide it."

Such an underrated song. One of my favourites

Such a sad time. We knew this was Madness's last song before they split. I really didn't know which group to follow after years of being a Nutty Boys fan. Then some of the band came back as The Madness & that album was totally awesome. ❤️❤️

@raysmith7251

Beat The Bride ..my fave on that!!..

@philnewton-england7795

@gobbledegook21

That was such an underated album, and some great songs such as In wonder, Nail down th days & Nightmare nightmare

@vandamparmo7959

When they broke up it was losing part of the family but they've come back stronger and better with old age😁

@user-rq7gz5su3f

Couldn't listen to this song for decades as it reminded me of when they split. I was devastated. I mean really devastated. How can people who don't even know I exist have such an impact on our lives? Long live Madness.

@TONYCOV881

They took it as far as they could go after Mike Barson left the band their songs were good but not as strong as they were, they were great for their time we always love them for it.

@bowser515

Madness really are timeless. And this is one of my favourites from them. Love it...

@pp37903

This was always a favourite of mine. I saw them live last night for the first time - they absolutely blew me away, but very little from this era made the set - it was dominated by very early stuff.
