The Look of Love
Madonna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should have left you standing right where you stood
Should have let you go, should have had the sense to know
Like a train you'd come and I'd lose my place
Now I'm on this trip, I took a fall from grace

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, from the eyes of pride
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

I've had a map laid out from the day I was born
But the roads are blocked and the paper is worn
And all the books I've read and the things I know
Never taught me to laugh, never taught to let go

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, from the eyes of pride
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

My conscience is clear I know right from wrong
That's a lie, I know nothing except that you're gone
But there's more to learn from the look in your eyes
That trip round this world, the stars in the sky

Now all the books I've read, and the things I know
Never taught me to live, never taught me to let go

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, from the eyes of pride
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, Lord knows I've tried
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

(Nowhere to hide)
(No place to run)

(Nowhere to hide)
(No place to run)

Overall Meaning

In Madonna's song The Look Of Love, the lyrics convey the feeling of regret by the singer for not letting go of a relationship that was doomed to fail. The lines "Should have left you standing right where you stood, Should have let you go, should have had the sense to know" indicate that the singer stayed in the relationship even though it was clear that it was going nowhere. The metaphor of a train is used to describe the inevitable journey the relationship was taking, and how the singer lost her place in it.

The chorus "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide from the look of love, from the eyes of pride" portrays how the singer is trapped and helpless in the face of the love she still feels for her former partner, despite her attempts to escape it. The lines "I've had a map laid out from the day I was born, But the roads are blocked and the paper is worn" reflect how the singer has had a plan for her life but it has not turned out the way she expected. She admits that her education and knowledge have not prepared her for love and life's unexpected turns.

In the end, despite feeling regretful, the singer tries to learn from the experience and the look in the eyes of her former partner. She realizes she needs to learn to let go and live in the present. The song's moving lyrics and Madonna's emotive voice make it a powerful ballad that connects with listeners.

„The Look of Love“ and „Live to Tell“ are my favorite songs by Madonna ♥️♥️

@blanqita7

Estoy de acuerdo, para mí son las dos mejores canciones de madona,

@irina1296

One of her most underrated singles. Actually, this song should have been in the "Something to Remember" (1995) ballad compilation

@ranlive1

irina1296 This wasn’t a single (in the U.S.).

@virginmaterial4175

No. This wasn't underrated it was also a hit in the UK

@billmurray7473

I know.
It doesn't really belong in this movie.
Seems Madonna was going for a
screwball comedy and missed the mark.

@malodavido

fumero nobody is talking about who's that girl or causing a commotion. Besides who's that girl is in celebration. The soundtrack has many good songs non sang by Madonna and there is Also Can't stop. This song should have been in something to remember

@magicslave3066

I haven’t heard this song in so long, still gives me goose bumps.

I'm sure Madonna's own connection to some of these songs is not as strong as some her fans' connections to them. This is a gorgeous melody with beautiful lyrics that sounds as timeless as Live To Tell. If only she would realize how much fans would love to hear it again. Its mysterious vibe of the inescapable feeling of firbidden love could fit into a number of narrative arcs. Imagine a tour of ONLY the forgotten songs: Rescue Me, The Look of Love, Angel, Physical Attraction, Causing A Commotion, You'll See, Cherish, Take A Bow...
